And now, because I need a break from my usual work, a poem,
by me; for you.
Roxanne Von Drake works really hard,
But just you wait, she’s quite a card!
She’s not one to huff and puff,
But even so, she’s kind of gruff…
Annie is just eight years old.
She’s bright of mind and spirit bold!
So, can she make this old girl smile?
Surly that could take a while…
“Annie, I have work to do,
I’m far too busy to play with you!”
Just what could the young pup say
To make a grownup stop and play?
“Please, Ms. Drake, I’m just so board.
There’s nothing to do!” the puppy roared.
“Why don’t you sit and read a book?
I’ve got plenty; have a look.”
Annie took a look around.
She was silent; not a sound.
Although they were one’s she’d never read,
“They’re all too hard,” she finely said.
“I could keep busy if I had some string,
Otherwise I could always sing!”
“Please don’t sing,” the old dog insisted.
“Can I have some string?” the girl requested.
“Sure, my dear, all you can find!”
If she could find it, she wouldn’t mind.
The fact was that there wasn’t any,
But places to look, there were many.
Roxie watched her eyes go wide.
Where oh where would string hide?
“That should keep her pretty busy.
She’ll run around until she’s dizzy!”
Roxie stretched out his legs and then leaned back.
“When it comes to kids, I’ve got the knack!”
In not too long she felt a tug.
Her left paw lifted off the rug.
Beneath the desk, she took a peek.
It was Annie; that little sneak!
In her hands, the laces swirled.
One by one the loops unfurled,
‘til the shoes held barely on.
Before she knew it, they were gone!
“I found some string, and these sneakers, too!
Say, don’t these two belong to you?”
“Don’t you know you shouldn’t steal?”
“I’ll give them back, it’s no big deal!”
Ms. Von Drake just taped her pen.
“I’ll give you to the count of ten!”
Her hand reached out and ran a claw
Up and down Roxs’ stockinged paw!
The feeling made her toes wiggle;
Poor old Rox began to giggle!
She was used to being feared,
People ran when this one leered.
But now this little Dobie pup,
Was making her go belly-up!
“I’m sorry too keep bugging you.”
The little pup began to coo.
“They look soft,” she was so sly,
This was it, she had to try…
She plucked the socks from both her paws,
Set them aside and bared her claws.
The old dog kicked and squirmed about;
Forgetting her place, she began to shout!
The other patrons stopped to see,
This old grump cut loose and free!
Colored by me.
