Altough I in fact have finished this, I never posted it in my gallery, so I thought I'd show the rough work first. As you can see, I've just about finished the figure in the foreground. She's an "imaginary" Kjola, in the sense that I never invented a serious character for this role. (You have to imagine she's wearing a khaki vest, and a short dress of blue jean material. The knife is just for worrying rope or wood -- who assaults a Kjola if they value their hide?) The jeep is in the process of being tightened up and penciled in heavy. The background shows a detailed desertscape of the sort I favour. Climbing it are Huey, Looey, and Dewey.
Yes, it's the second of my never-to-be-told Uncle Scrooge adventures, his effort to discover the Lost Kingdom of Prester John. PJ was a mythical figure invented by desparate Europeans in the early middle ages. Much of Christendom had been overrun by Muslims and there were Huns showing up in the East. To many, the end of the world wasn't long now... But those who still had hope imagined there was still a powerful Christian preist-king named John, who ruled over a prosperous land far beyond the mountains, deserts, Muslims, and Huns, who might lend aid to the imperiled West if only word could be gotten to him. It didn't seem to bother anyone that by that time the poor schmuck would have to be four hundred years old, or some such. Hey... that's the power of faith. You can believe anything. In any case, let us suppose Scrooge McDuck came across evidence there had been a Prester John in fact, and while he was probably something quite different from the pious Christian do-gooder the medievals expected, he nevertheless had probably piled up an almighty treasure of gold and precious jewels. Fabulous treasures are a magnet to Scrooge McDuck, and he didn't waste much time organizing an expedition.
You may recall some generalities about a previous McDuck expedtion I wrote about, to find the gold coin that proved Scrooge was a direct descendent of Christ and rightful ruler of Europe... or not. In that story notion I invented an extra character to accompany Scrooge and his nephews. She was an orphan Kjola (though gawd knows how that could have happend! Just got lost maybe.) I pictured her being just about 13 or 14 at the time of "The Donative of Constantine". In this adventure she's about a year older and has more experience with her employer McDuck's offbeat quests. Since she's not officially a character in either the Barks canon or in any of my worlds, she hasn't really got a name. But I call her either Terri or Terra.
Most likely Prester John was just a foggy memory of the Byzantine emperors, who held out against Islam until Constantinople's fall in 1476. The Venetians and Greeks knew better of course. It was ignorant Franks and English who believed in Prester John.
