Well, it would seem that they either expect you to stab the man or break the stick in anger. I am not in approval of either course of action as it could possibly seal my fate. If it is a possible choice, I would commit no action then to ask what the man suggests I do with it as there are no obvious courses of action other than stabbing him. And I'm pretty sure that he would rather not be stabbed.
