“You climb a ladder to get in and out?” Kara questioned in shock.
“Well, yes. The lair's entrance is fairly high off the ground and I've never found another way out.”
“You can't DO that when you're six months along! You're just going to have to figure out another—gentler way down before you get any bigger.”
They had been chatting for hours, long after dinner when he went off to find something to fill his stomach. Lucky for him this high up the mountain range yielded excellent wild rams, although he had to be careful of the horns. The sun was beginning to disappear and he was starting to wonder if they were ever going to leave the hovel the witch resided in. Rayne seemed to be well engrossed in the conversation of do's and don't's, so much so the witch made them tea and pulled stools out of a small covered compartment in the floor so they could sit around the little counter she called a table and be lectured all night.
“Magnus could let me up and down,” Rayne volunteered him easily. Magnus sat straighter and wondered when he'd become the conversation piece but not actually be involved in the conversation. Thankfully the witch shook her head.
“He's not going to be there all the time, he has to go eat and I don't think he'll enjoy taking you out ten—fifteen times a day,” the witch responded. “Best to have a chamber pot probably, he can dump it for you. Remember you'll be peeing for two.”
Oh good, carrying Rayne out to do her business now became him dumping it. Maybe he should go wandering the lair when they got back to see if there was another way out, mortal sized and easier to deal with than that...
“Do you have a nursery?” the witch inquired. A...what? Magnus frowned as Rayne raised a brow. “A place for the baby to live while its still growing...a room for the cradle?”
“We do not have a hatchery, no,” Magnus said calmly. “But our sleeping cavern is well big enough for the offspring to be in with us.”
“But no cradle,” the witch assumed, but she was right, Magnus didn't even know what the word meant besides to hold something in one's arms. “You'll need one, best to have it before you get too far along. Sometimes mothers can give birth earlier than expected and you want to make sure that you have a safe place for them to sleep.”
“What does one look like?” Magnus asked as he quirked his brow up a bit. Rayne slapped the back of her hand on his chest. “What?”
“You can't steal one,” Rayne ordered, “You could end up stealing someone else's baby and then what would we do?”
“I would leave it on the floor, the parents would come for it,” Magnus responded, seeing no problem there. He didn't think he could stand a hatchling unless it was his own, he wouldn't risk taking someone else's. The witch shook her head a little as Rayne put her paw over his mouth.
“We'll buy one,” Rayne responded calmly.
“Good,” the witch nodded a few times before sipping her tea. “Now do you have cloth for diapers?”
Magnus looked at Rayne, her paw still over his mouth and she had the same clueless look he did. The witch sighed heavily before downing her tea and setting it aside.
“I'll start making stew, we might be here a while.”
***********************************************************************
Rayne opened the front door into the night, seeing Magnus' back as he sat on the little uneven step leading into the small open front yard on the path leading into the woods. He had been out there for some time as Kara offered to let them stay the night in the house. He didn't want to, he didn't seem to like anything she had to say but he was staying. Rayne shut the door behind her, trying to figure out how to convince him to come inside but the dragon was in essence, hard headed. Even getting him to stay this long was more proof he loved her than anything he had ever said before.
She slipped around him and sat next to him, leaning her shoulder against his and looking up at the star-filled sky above. No moon tonight, she thought, everything was sparkling in the dark void above them.
“I'm not going in,” he stated calmly.
“I know, that's why I'm staying out here with you,” she answered, putting her chin on his shoulder and glancing at him as his gaze fell down at their feet. “But you can't argue that this hasn't been a little enlightening.”
“It will be warmer in there,” he responded, trying to be distant.
“You can keep me warm,” Rayne answered as she hooked her arm around his. His face was trying not to quirk into a smile, she watched the line of his lips twitch and knew he wasn't mad. He just didn't like to be proven wrong, he would never admit it though. He unhooked his arm and wrapped it around her waist, scooting back a bit and pulling Rayne between his legs. She leaned her back against his chest and looked back up, letting his body frame around hers and his arms wrap around her ribs. Magnus nuzzled his nose under her hair and nibbled affectionately along her neck and shoulder, settling in a protective stance around her. “Thank you.”
“For what?” he asked in a lower tone.
“For coming here,” Rayne answered, putting her paw over his own. “Listening to me.”
“I always listen to you,” he stated calmly, grinning into her shoulder. “But I will be the bigger dragon here and accept your thank you.”
“Yes, well, you won't hear it again,” she teased, “Because I was right about finding someone.”
He growled a little but she could still feel him smiling into her fur, sitting in the quiet of the night for a long time. She felt a sense of ease she hadn't had for a very long time. Was she still panicked about having a cub? More than she could say but as it looked like a cub and not some sort of hybrid, she held out hope she would be able to handle it better. She even started to doze off but woke when Magnus' back straightened quickly, his muscles rigid as he seemed focused ahead of them. She blinked a few times, about to ask him what was wrong when the door opened behind them to Kara's home.
“Inside,” she ordered as they both turned to look at her. A rush of wind came from the house—no the wind came from around Kara—and shifted through the brush. Magnus' eyes narrowed before turning back to the forest. “Now.”
“Magnus,” Rayne said with a slight pleading voice to it, beginning to stand and taking his paw with her, tugging him up as well. “Come on.”
“I can't feel it anymore,” Magnus growled to Kara carefully. “Another one of you is coming.”
“I protected the area,” Kara muttered as Rayne pulled Magnus back into the well-lit house. “She won't be able to feel your presence until she steps over the barrier threshold.”
Kara shut the door quickly before stepping in front of Rayne and putting her pointer finger on Rayne's forehead with some pressure to it. Rayne crossed her eyes and frowned, before Kara dragged her finger downwards and Rayne felt as if the wind were knocked out of her. Magnus grabbed her bicep as Rayne stumbled back, snarling at Kara but Kara had already put her finger on Magnus' forehead and dragged it down as well. Magnus slumped back, hitting the edge of the table but held onto Rayne tightly, unable to let her fall to the ground.
“THE HELLS IS WRONG WITH YOU?!” Magnus bellowed at Kara even though it seemed far quieter than his usual voice. Rayne felt herself begin to return to normal and looked to Kara for an explanation. “You—you sealed ME?! IN THIS FORM?!”
“Quiet,” Kara whispered urgently, “I needed to seal the magic in both of you, otherwise she would have been able to sense you, dragon, and your baby. Would you like to live through tonight? Because I certainly would.”
“Sealed?” Rayne didn't understand, rubbing her head a little where Kara had touched it. “I don't understand...”
“No time to understand,” Kara whispered, “Sit, don't speak and don't let her touch you. She'll know I've sealed you and start to pry. She'll already suspect something is wrong because of the barrier around the house. If you need to respond to anything, you are married and having a baby but against your parents wishes, work with that.”
“What is coming?” Magnus stated as he did as Kara ordered, taking a stool and pulling Rayne to sit on his lap away from the door.
“A witch of a different coven, the Coven of the Red Moon,” Kara replied as she suddenly grabbed a few things from her upper pantry and a few bowls. She started mixing and chanting before there were several different smoking incense and concoctions on the table, Rayne coughing a bit when one of them spontaneously combusted in front of her.
The wind suddenly blew the door and windows open, traveling around Kara like a cyclone before everything went still around them. Easy footsteps came along the path as was someone humming, Kara smoothing out her cloak before putting on a sort of genuine smile. For some reason that worried Rayne the most.
A red silk cloak appeared in the doorway, covering someone with black furred paws. They were shorter than Kara, ears under the cloak smaller as well but as the figure stepped in deeper her tail gave away her species, black with two white stripes along its large fluffed fur.
“Sister,” Kara greeted as she bowed her head to the skunk witch.
“Sister Kara,” the skunk greeted, her voice far more smooth and attractive. Kara voice was friendly, this one sounded much more collected and mischievous. Rayne watched as the skunk leaned back up and turned her head, lavender eyes focusing on Rayne's own in the shadow of the hooded fabric. “Charges so late tonight?”
“Unexpected,” Kara explained simply. “Clients are clients no matter what time of night, as well as you know, Salena.”
“Of course I do,” Salena replied in a gentler tone as she pulled her hood off and revealed her almost white hair. Two stripes began just above her eyes as a third stripe hung between them, pointing down at her nose into the contrasting black fur. “Tell me, what is so urgent a pair of young lovers like you would be seeking a witch's help in the middle of a moonless night?”
“Parent problems,” Kara answered as she offered Salena a stool across the small table from Rayne and Magnus. Rayne could tell hat Magnus was seething, and just from his hold on Rayne's waist he was trying to keep himself in check. “They're having a baby without her parents consent or knowledge, no approval and all. They can't go to the local healer.”
“The healer would spill all those little precious beans,” Salena grinned as her lavender eyes focused solely on Rayne. Rayne smiled a little nervously, before she felt enthralled in the gaze. “If you're pregnant, I can make the baby a lovely little girl or a strong boy. Wouldn't you like that? A choice? You don't look very far along which always makes things easier—for a price of course.”
Rayne felt as if drawn to the witch easily, eyes blinking slowly as the skunk's paw came forward to reach for her own across the table.
“Wouldn't that be nice?” the skunk crooned as Rayne's head tilted, everything felt slow even when Magnus grasped Rayne's paw and pulled it back into her own lap. The gaze left her and Rayne felt time seem to fall back into synch, Magnus glaring the witch down without hesitation. “Obviously your husband doesn't seem to want that.”
Without a word Kara set a bag marked with one of her labels in front of Salena, looking down at the skunk until Salena turned her head up and their gazes met.
“I would remind you they are my clients,” Kara stated in a condescending tone. “And I would appreciate it if you didn't try to hex them for your own profits.”
“Just trying to be welcoming, Sister,” Salena responded with one paw up in defeat. “And making conversation while I wait. Curious as to why you would put up a barrier with merely these two present. They seem fairly ordinary to me.”
“I give my clients their respect and privacy,” Kara stated before stepping around to the pantry again. “In case anyone followed them here.”
“You must be worth something,” Salena's eyes traveled to Magnus, brow raising up as did her stripe. “For your wife to put up such a fuss over you too, or for you to be followed out here. Obviously not wealthy though, tell me, what do you do?”
“He's a dragon slayer,” Rayne responded suddenly, Magnus looking up to her but he seemed alright with the lie. He was for a bit even though he really wasn't. Salena's face lit up, which was the reaction Rayne was hoping.
“Unsteady and dangerous,” Salena observed. “No wonder you have all those unique scars and not exactly her daddy's favorite I'm sure. I didn't realize that Kara was beginning to delve into the magics of flesh and bone.”
“I don't,” Kara answered as she came back over and set another small pouch in front of Salena. “Unlike some I know how to draw power in without magical aphrodisiacs.”
Salena's eye twitched as Rayne looked up at Kara. Didn't she say she wanted to live through the night? Rayne was beginning to second guess that notion since that seemed a direct hit to the skunk's ego.
“Some of us aren't born with such great powers, Sister,” Salena tried to play the wounded martyr. “But tell me, shouldn't you be having puppies of your own by now? You certainly look old enough for the Grand Luminary to send a token male your way, she best do it soon.”
“As always, she will contact me when she's ready,” Kara answered with no hint of annoyance. “Some blue dandelion root as well?”
“Always,” Salena stated, but now her focus was off of Rayne and Magnus and on Kara completely. “A new moon is coming tomorrow, but you knew that.”
“I have to make sure, its a weakness,” Kara bowed her head a bit and placed all the pouches into one larger but crudely sewn sack. “Anything else you will need for the ceremony?”
“No, I believe that is all,” Salena said with a slight sad sigh to it, standing from her stood and taking the sack from Kara's paw and turning to Rayne and Magnus. “I will give prayers for your baby, but it is in capable paws. Good night.”
Rayne gave her a quick smile as Magnus looked away, turning as if bored with the whole situation. Salena's eyes suddenly narrowed on Rayne even when Kara made towards the door to dismiss her.
“Who is your father?” Salena asked Rayne suddenly. Rayne blinked a few times before looking down at the table. “Your pattern—stripes look awfully familiar...”
“As I said, my clients need their privacy,” Kara said forcefully. “Goodnight Salena.”
The skunk turned to her fellow witch, bowing her head before turning again to Rayne and then stalking out into the night. Kara kept the door open and watched it for some time as they all stayed silent, waiting for her to signal it was alright to speak. She shut the door and let out the breath she seemed to be holding, before sitting in the spot Salena had been in.
“You know its been a little too intense around here these past few weeks,” Kara huffed before leaning over and touching Rayne's forehead. Rayne let out a little squeak as a jolt went through her body, but nothing painful. “Stop glaring and let me release the seal you lizard.”
Rayne snorted, stepping from Magnus' lap to let to let him lean forward, seeing nothing as Kara touched Magnus' forehead but he jerked the same way Rayne had. His eyes closed as he smiled, letting out a gentle growling groan as his magic was released from its captivity. Seeming to want to make sure he coughed a little before letting out a long stream of flame into the air from his throat and making Kara and Rayne both duck for cover. He closed his mouth and looked quite pleased with himself.
“Don't burn my house down!” Kara shouted at him.
“It would make it an improvement,” Magnus said cockily, crossing his arms over his chest.
