Ueno is the district we usually stay in when we go to Tokyo. There are a lot of reasons we base our trip out of Ueno. For one, the Skyliner train goes strait from Narita Airport to Ueno Train Station which makes it easy to get to and from the hotel with all our luggage. That may not seem so important when you get there, but that convenience becomes apparent when you leave Japan carrying an additional 80 pounds of luggage. Also, the JR Yamanote line stops at Ueno. The Japan Rail system is a surprisingly efficient beast. Since the most heavily traveled areas of Tokyo are relatively close to its center, it makes sense to have a rail line traveling in a small circle and stopping at each point of interest. That rail line is the Yamanote line. Being close to a train station somewhere on the Yamanote line makes it a lot easier to run back and forth carrying stuff you purchased.

I’ve been to Ikebukuro several times to visit the Tokyu Hands and the Gamers there but have never stayed :)
Another reason we stay in Ueno is because it is only two stops from Akihabara on the Yamanote line. Akihabara has KBooks, Mandarake, Animate, Comic Toranoana, Gamers, about 10 Soft Map stores (for a good selection of hentai games), and a handful of small independent dojin shops. We would stay in Akihabara if the hotels there weren't so expensive :) Just doesn't seem worth paying twice as much money for the convenience of not having to take the train so much :)
