Well, unlike most modern folks, I know the true purpose of Halloween, but I learned that from my parents, one was an atheist for most of my upbringing and one is a half-assed baptist.
Halloween originally went by many different names in different parts of the world and was observed by many cultures world-round at or around the same time of year. There comes a time in the year where the wall thins between the world considered to be real and the one that is considered to be the place of spirits. When the wall thins, traffic can move both ways across the barrier. Fortunately for most, folk from this side lack the knowledge to intentionally cross, in large part due to the death of mysticism. On the other hand, things trapped on the other side, the spirit world, if you will, can wander freely on either side and the ones who realize this has happened have the ability to cause great mischief and even harm to those in the living world.
The reason treats are provided to children making the rounds disguised as monsters is: they provide the service of making a show for the evil spirits that "this house is already taken." When the evil spirits see the house has someone working there already, they move on off, down the lane. When you do this, you deserve a treat and if you don't get one, it's your duty to wreak the mischief that your presence would have spared. The service deserves its reward. At midnight, the veil closes and the spirits go back where they belong.
In summation, stop touchin' my stuff.
That about cover your question? I kinda got lost in there somewhere.
