“Wait, wait, wait… let me get this all straight… you are getting trained by some retired drunk swordswoman?”
“Yeah, and she’s making me wear dresses!!”
“And YOU found a bounty hunter who’s teaching you more about medicine?”
“U-uh huh… h-he’s v-very nice…”
“And I already knew you almost got eaten by a gyarados. Saw it chasing you… and chasing you… and chasing you…”
“Don’t remind me!”
“Okay, did I miss anybody or is that all the crazy you’ve managed to find in this empty town?”
“Juuuuuuuules! I got a new dress for yoooooooou!”
“Right, there’s Beret. Add her to the list of crazy then… and Jules stop hiding behind me!!”
Bright and early the next day Petie was catching up his crew activities the day before. They’d spent the night in the Elroy’s guest room, which now resembled a nursery, and were sitting on the dock outside the house chatting before going their separate ways for the day. Shackles had gone into the forest to catch breakfast and Anne was waiting for his return so they could continue her lesson, Beret was there with baby girl clothes in hand to help get Jules dressed for his lesson with June, and Chouji was plotting what could only be described as bloody vengeance against the gyarados for making him lose his net and his catch.
Petie sighed as he looked at the dry dock. They’d managed to finish disassembling the Sea Cradle yesterday and had started rebuilding it. It was barely enough to be called a skeleton of a ship at the moment but he could already tell it was going to be bigger than before. Not having anything better to do he fiddled with his telescope and checked out the horizon… which was just a bunch of blue sea for as far as he could see. He was about to fold it when he noticed something. Blinking he rubbed his eyes before looking again to make sure he wasn’t hallucinating. After confirming it he folded the scope up and pointed.
“Chouji, I need you to swim out that-a-ways as quick as you can.”
“What in the name of Otohime for?”
“There’s a boat sinking out there and there’s a kid on it.”
“WHAT!?”
SPLASH!
Chouji reacted immediately and dove into the water swimming as fast as he could in the direction Petie had pointed. It took everybody else a moment to digest what Petie said. Beret acted first and tried to jump Petie for the telescope making him squeal in surprise as there was the tell-tale POOF sound as Beret was momentarily hidden by the powder. There was silence as everybody stared and waited for the powder to clear to reveal… Beret unchanged? The smeargle looked confused for a moment till she heard the squeaking of rubber pants and realized she was in a diaper as thick as the rest of them… but it was the only part of her outfit that had changed. Petie scratched his head a little.
“Huh… guess she was already dressed too babyish for my powers? You okay?”
“Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?”
“… you’re diapered.”
“So? They’re just thicker undies right? Nothing to get worked up about.”
“… you’re weird.”
“So I’ve been told, now gimme that telescope!”
“Hey!”
Petie found himself shoved over as Beret pulled the telescope away from him and then for good measure sat on him as she looked through it. Luckily her padded bottom and the fact she didn’t put her full weight down kept him from being squished. Though from this awkward position he noticed something odd. Unlike the rest of his crew who’d ended up in pastel blue rubber pants Beret’s were a pastel pink and had rows of frills running along the bottom. If his powers were working with his subconscious did that mean he thought of her as the girliest member of his friends? His thoughts were interrupted by Beret speaking up.
“Anybody ever seen a Zorua with wings before?”
“Huh?”
“Things have gotten reeeeally interesting ever since you showed up teddy.”
“Get off me!”
“But you’re comfy! Or maybe it’s the padding?”
“Don’t care! Get off!”
********************
A few minutes later a badly damaged boat coasted its way into the harbor, Chouji underneath it providing the thrust. They could tell that it wasn’t a local ship. It was oddly shaped and lacquered an orange-red color with an odd figure head of a vulpix girl with rounded tufts on her ears and angel wings. Oddest of all were two huge seashell like things attached to the back. The ship was wrecked and barely holding together. Luckily the shipwrights were on hand to help haul it up and secure it since Chouji wouldn’t have been able to let go without it sinking.
Pulling the fishmon back up onto the dock they could all hear crying coming from the boat. Anne was the firs on board, beating out Jules and Beret, with a little boost from Nanny. She was a doctor and someone might be hurt… but everybody had wanted to be the first to see what was up there. Once they got onboard they were greeted by a strange sight. It looked like Beret hadn’t been seeing things. There was a tiny zorua kid with little angel wings hugging Anne tight and sobbing into her shirt like a scared toddler.
They gathered around, staring in silence as Anne did her best to calm the sobbing kid. They couldn’t see his face because it was buried in Anne’s shirt but they could see his ears had perfectly rounded tufts on them like on the vulpix figurehead. The little wings on his back matched as well though they were much too small to lift its body making them wonder if they were just sewn into the clothes. They couldn’t tell if it was a boy or girl since its face was hidden and it was dressed in an odd gown like outfit. It took Petie a moment to recognize it as a yukata, a type of outfit from Wano Country. The silence lasted a moment as Anne hugged the kid and gave it a once over.
“H-he seems to b-be unhurt… h-he’s just scared o-out of his m-mind.” She said gently as she gathered the kid up in her arms. He was a little shorter than Jules which luckily made him easy to carry. “It’s a boy?” Beret asked, displaying the normal amount of tact they’d come to expect from her. She leaned forward to get a better look at the fox. The kid seemed oblivious to them as he just continued to sob loudly. “W-we need to c-calm him d-down somehow…” Anne said as she cradled him “Who k-knows how l-long he c-could keep t-this up…”
Petie looked around for a moment before picking up what looked like a small chunk of wood that probably came from a banister or something. Holding it in his hand he’d decided to test something as he focused on it hard. A small puff of powder engulfed his hand and when it faded he was holding a shiny new pacifier. He inwardly noted that he did have some control over how things transformed . He stepped forward, moved the fox’s head a little so he could see his mouth, and popped the pacifier right in. There was a momentary shocked look on the kids face before he sniffled and sucked on it softly, his crying dying down somewhat.
“There, now lets get off this ship before it collapses.” Petie said, trying to hide the proud smirk. One of his ideas had worked. Luckily B.B. and Nanny had taken up position on the dock to catch them as they hopped down one at a time. Soon they were all gathered around Anne and the kid. His tears had mostly dried and he was just sniffling as he sucked on the pacifier. Anne turned him around so he was facing her and spoke in a gentle, even tone “D-do you think you c-can talk now?” the boy just looked at her timidly for a moment before nodding. She gently tugged the pacifier from his mouth as the other braced for more crying. That didn’t happen as he sniffled a little more before saying in a weak and wobbly voice.
“I-is this the b-blue sea?”
“The blue sea?”
“… I w-w-wanna go home… b-back to S-Skypiea…”
That name set off bells in Petie’s head… which were immediately drowned out as the boy starting to sob and wail again. Anne quickly stuck his pacifier back in and cuddled him close as the fox cried. Jules noticed Petie’s expression change, tapped him on the shoulder asking “Petie? You’ve got that “Momma told me a bedtime story about this” expression on your face… what’s up?” Petie sighed and rubbed his head a little “Well, this is gonna sound crazy… crazier than normal anyway… but I think this kid is from an island and sea in the sky called Skypiea.” There was silence as everybody stared at him before Beret spoke up.
“Well it would explain the weird ship and the wings.”
“… so you believe me?”
Chouji shrugged “Why not? In case you didn’t notice this is a WEIRD world… heck I came from an island at the bottom of the sea remember?” he said as Beret giggled and gently stroked the fox’s head “Anyway what do you know about this sky-whatsit place? She asked looking at Petie. He shrugged and adjusted his bonnet “Not much… the book didn’t go into detail, it just said there was a sea in the sky and in that sea was a land called Skypiea… heck it didn’t even say if there were people there or not. Or how to get there or get back for that matter.” He finished looking at the ship.
“Well… if it fell from the sky that might be why it’s so banged up?” Jules offered, shrugging a little as Chouji rubbed his shoulder and rotated it a little “Well since I hauled the stupid thing I can safely say it’s got SOMETHING in it or else they make tiny ships REALLY heavy where that kid comes from.” The three boys were quiet for a moment as Anne, sensing what was about to happen, sighed and put her hand on her head. “I CALL DIBS ON EXPLORING IT!” they all shouted at once before glaring at each other.
“Too late boys!”
“Huh?”
They all looked up to find Beret had climbed back onboard the boat and was waving from the deck as she giggled and playfully stuck her tongue out at them. Anne sighed again and shook her head as the three shouted protests and scrambled over each other to get onboard. Looking down at the zorua still sniffling and sucking his pacifier as he snuggled into her lap she just lightly rubbed his head hoping to help him calm down “I’ll j-just stay down here t-then…”
**********************
“Be careful, this thing feels like it might fall apart!”
“Oooooh! What does this do?”
“Beret, are you familiar with what the word “Careful” means?”
“Yep! Don’t care! Besides I’m used to walking on the town pier, if anyone is in danger here it’s you three.”
“…”
“She has a point there Petie.”
“Shut it Jules.”
“Anyway what do you think the seashells do?”
“The ones on the sides? Decorations I guess?”
“No silly! I mean all these ones in the hold here!”
“What?”
The three hurried over to where Beret was and sure enough she’d found a hold full of boxes of odd seashells. Like the rest of the ship they were badly damaged and the busted boxes had scattered the shells out onto the floor forming a little pile. Curious the four entered and began picking up the shells, looking them over to see what was so valuable about them that they’d be the ships only cargo, like the two outside attached to the ship the shells were weird shaped with holes in them. Turning it over in his paws Petie tried to remember if Momma’s bedtime story mentioned anything about this.
“Heeeeey… I think there’s a button here!”
Everybody looked to Jules as he held up a shell that looked sort of similar to a snails shell with a flat spiral shape. The riolu was messing with the back of it as he looked into it as if expecting something to be inside. “You can’t mean there’s a button the shell…” Petie started to say before there was a CLICK sound as Jules’s paws indeed found the button on the back of the shell. Jules squealed as a blast of air shot out of the shell into his face making him tumbled back onto his butt and drop it. Everyone stared in confusion as Jules rubbed his face. He wasn’t hurt but air up the nose and in the eyes didn’t feel pleasant.
Petie scurried over to help him up as Jules pointed at the shell accusingly “It attacked me!!” he shouted earning him weird looks from everybody as Beret picked the shell up and looked it over. Carefully holding it away from her she pressed down on the button and another burst of air shot out strong enough to blow her floppy ears back. “Wow!” she giggled grinning from ear to ear “It shoots out air! I didn’t know seashells could do that!” Chouji gently picked up what looked like a conch shell “Must just be shells from this Skypiea place…” he said accidently pressing the button on the shell… which promptly started to repeat “Skypiea place…” in Chouji’s voice making him squeak in surprise and drop it.
“Careful! We don’t know what these things could do!” Petie said as he stepped forward and paled as he heard a CLICK sound and realized he’d just stepped on one of them. He squealed and jumped back as if the shell might explode… to find it was instead lighting up like a nightlight. He timidly poked it with his foot as it continued to give off light for a moment before stopping. Beret giggled and randomly grabbed a shell “I wanna try next!” she said pressing the button… the shell seem to sputter as if trying to do something but nothing came out. Beret pouted and threw it aside, grabbing another on and trying again… only to get the same result.
Now visibly frustrated Beret grabbed one more and pointed it up before pressing the button. There was a slight wooshing noise followed by the sound of breaking wood. Slowly the four looked to find there was a large gash neatly cleaved into the deck as if somebody had taken an axe to it. They stared at it for a moment before slowly moving their gaze to the shell still clutched in Beret’s hand. Then there gaze moved to the huge number of shells literally all around them. There was a tense moment of silence…
Which was promptly broken by all four of them scrambling to get out the door at same time and nearly ripping it off its frame.
*******************
Anne was gently stroking the fox’s head as he sucked on his pacifier. The small boy looked like he was just about to doze off… which in Anne’s opinion would be good since he’d obviously been through some kind of extreme trauma. She couldn’t be sure what happened but if he was from an island in the sky then he had to get down here somehow… and with how battered his boat looked he might have fallen… but that didn’t make any sense. From that height the boat would have shattered and he’d have been killed on impact. There was something here she was missing…
Suddenly they heard wood shattering as pieces of the battered ships deck were blown away. Anne squealed in surprise as the zorua leapt up, eyes wide, as the pacifier fell from his mouth. He looked like he was about to say something but a crashing sound interrupted him as Petie, Jules, Chouji, and Beret came scrambling into view onto the deck before THROWING themselves off it like the whole thing would explode. They crashed down onto the dock hard enough to make Anne and the kid wince… but luckily they landed on Chouji who despite muffled protests was no worse for the wear.
Anne was about to rush over to make sure they were okay… but the boy beat her to it as he marched over to them. “W-what do you think you were doing!?” his voice was high and reedy either with fear or anger… or maybe a mix of both “T-that axe dial c-could have KILLED you!” he said glaring at them as they picked themselves back up. “Axe dial?” Petie asked as he fixed his bonnet. The boy blinked, looking surprised “You… don’t know what dials are?” he said softly as Jules dusted himself out and looked at him “If you mean those shell things then nope, never seen anything like them.” The boy hung his head a little and fidgeted slightly.
“O-oh… um… t-they’re shells that you can find in the white-white sea… they can do all sorts of things but they mainly absorb and spit out things like air, light, heat, sound…” he waved his hands a little as if to help with his explanation. He was obviously not use to having to explain this sort of thing as well as extremely nervous and scared “I-in Skypiea we use them f-for almost everything… t-that one you messed with was an axe dial though. I-it’s almost extinct and a d-dangerous weapon.” He finished looking at them with a pleading expression as if praying that made any sense. Beret tilted her head to the side before speaking up.
“Well these dials sound really useful… but what’s the white-white sea?”
“O-oh…” he hung his head and sniffled “I-it’s the s-sea of clouds were Skypiea is… y-you don’t know anything about Skypiea d-do you?” he asked, a tone of sorrow in his voice. They shook their heads as Anne came over and gently patted the boys shoulder “Now t-that you’re talking…” she asked gently as the boy looked to her timidly “C-care to tell us how you got here? Or w-what your name is?” The boy blinked as if he hadn’t thought about that before as he quickly gave a stooped bow “I-I’m so sorry!” standing back up straight he placed his paw on his head, his two end fingers sticking up “Heso. M-my name is G-Gabriel and I’m from Skypiea like I s-said before.”
He noticed the strange looks he was getting and blushed “O-oh… t-that is how we greet each other on Skypiea…” he repeated the gesture “By d-doing this and saying Heso. Understand?” he had a nervous look on his face till they nodded, Beret giggling at how silly the gesture looked. Blushing more at her giggles he pressed on “A-a-anyway… I g-got here by accident actually… it…” his ears drooped as he sniffled “It’s a l-long story…” Petie was the first to respond, placing a comforting paw on Gabriel’s shoulder “We’ve got all the time in the world, why don’t you sit down and tell us?” he offered as Gabriel blushed and nodded.
Once the fox was seated on a nearby crate and everybody had gathered around him he took a deep, shaky breath and started “M-my… my family harvests Dials for a living… we sail to island clouds and gather up a-any dials that might have washed up on the shore a-and on occasion my mom d-dives for them…” he looked around to make sure everybody was following so far. Jules was about to ask what island clouds where but a light elbow from Petie silenced him so Gabriel could continue “A-anyway… w-we’d just gotten home from collecting dials…” he paused, whimpering softly.
Anne gently rubbed his back to try and help him calm down as he took another breath and continued “T-the moorings came loose while Mom and Dad w-went inside and I was sorting the dials out… by the time I c-came out the ship had drifted off w-with me in it…” Chouji interrupted this time as he pointed to the ship “Couldn’t you just sail it back? Those things on the side of the ship are dials right? Probably one to act like motors or something?” he waited for Gabriel to nod before continuing “Then couldn’t you have turned those on and gotten back to your home?” Gabriel sat quietly for a moment before sighing.
“… t-there’s occasionally… sinkholes in the sea cloud… I a-accidentally found one before I could do that.”
“Oh…”
“Y-yeah… I e-ended up on the white sea… before you a-ask the white sea is under the w-white-white sea.” Gabriel said motioning his hands to try and convey a sense of different levels. After fumbling in the air for a moment he coughed, blushed, and continued “A-anyway… I was l-lost on the white sea and trying to find a way back up to the w-white-white sea…” his ears drooped “… but I found a hole d-down to the blue sea instead and crashed in the ocean.” He sniffled wiping the start of tears from his eyes “A-and now I d-don’t have any i-idea h-how to get h-h-home…” he opened his mouth to start bawling again but Anne had his pacifier on hand and popped it into his mouth. Blushing more he sucked on it lightly as he looked down.
Anne waited a few moments for him to calm down before asking the question that had been bugging her “Gabriel?” he looked up to her with his teary eyes “What aren’t you telling us?” she had to restrain a giggle at the adorably confused face Gabriel made “What I mean is… if you DID fall from those heights then the ship would have been splintered on impact and you’d probably be dead. So tell us… how did you escape with your ship in one piece and completely unhurt?” Gabriel’s eyes went wide as he realized what she was talking about and he looked away shyly before pulling his pacifier out “… p-promise you won’t get scared?” he asked softly making everybody but Petie look at him in confusion. The teddiursa sighed and looked at the smaller fox.
“You ate a devil fruit didn’t you?”
“…! H-how did you know?”
“… I’ll tell you after you tell us which devil fruit you ate, okay?”
“O-okay… um…” Gabriel timidly hopped down from the crate and put his hands out in front of him. Everyone watch silently as the fox took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and put his paws together. There was a moment of silence before something happened. Something white started to form between Gabriel’s paws and as he opened them in expanded and took a semi recognizable shape. They all went wide eyed as a white and fluffy cloud formed in front of Gabriel taking on a rather squashed shape as it finished forming, about twice Gabriel’s size now. They’re eyes went even wider when Gabriel actually, with a little struggle, climbed up onto the hovering cloud and sat down.
“I ate the K-Kumo Kumo no mi…” he said, blushing as he gave them a nervous smile “The Cloud Cloud Fruit… I can form clouds.” He finished before hanging his head a little as if worried about what they’d say. Chouji spoke up first “I’m kinda new to this whole surface thing but are you supposed to be able to sit on clouds?” he asked, poking the white wisp. It had a consistence similar to jelly as it gave a little under his finger before lightly bouncing back to normal. Gabriel blink in confusion for a moment before hanging his head “Oh… I’m s-sorry… you p-probably never even heard of i-island clouds.”
He patted the cloud he was sitting on “U-up in Skypiea this is o-our land… I don’t think these k-kind of clouds can naturally exist down here though… t-this one probably is only staying solid cause of my powers…” He said, ears drooping to show he wasn’t sure before perking back up “S-so are you gonna tell me h-how you knew I had a devil fruit now? Please?” They all turned to look at Petie for a moment before he said “Guys? Crew huddle, we need to talk.” They all got together… and promptly shoved Beret out of the circle before talking to each other in hushed voice as the smeargle folded her arms and pouted. Gabriel just gulped nervously as he sat on his cloud and waited.
A few minutes passed of them muttering amongst themselves, along with Beret trying to nose her way into the huddle and getting pushed out, before they broke. Petie waddled over to Gabriel as the fox trembled a little in fear. “Gabriel? Until you find a way to get home…” he said slowly and gently to keep from scaring the fox more “Would you like to join my crew?” Gabriel blinked and tilted his head to the side, confused and surprised by the offer “Y-your crew? You’re… pirates?” Petie chuckled and shook his head “Nope… least not technically… we’re bounty hunters. Anyway we saved you so you’re kinda our responsibility. So you wanna join?” he asked offering the fox his hand. What he didn’t say was he was pretty sure the kid would die on these seas without somebody watching out for him.
Gabriel timidly looked at the offered paw, tears welling up in his eyes, before taking it “T-thank you…” he sniffled as he shook Petie’s paw “T-thank you v-very much…” he wiped his eyes with his free hand before blinking and looking to Petie confused “B-but what does this have to do with your devil fruit?” Chuckling the teddiursa smiled as white powder suddenly obscured Gabriel from view making him squeal in fear. Luckily it cleared before he could panic too badly as he looked at Petie, crying softly “W-what was t-that about!?”
“Just getting you in the ships dress code.”
“H-huh?”
Sure enough Gabriel was dressed to code, though a bit differently than the rest of them. His yukata, now made of a softer material and pastel colored, sleeves now danged a few inches past his hands hiding them from view and giving him a cute helpless look while the skirt of the yukata had been shorted so that it showed off one of the thickest diapers Petie had ever seen. It bulged out around Gabriel’s middle making him look a bit like a new born. To complete it a bright lanyard dangled around his neck holding his pacifier in easy reach.
The fox look bewildered beyond belief as he looked down at himself. Petie tilted his head a little and wondered why everybody else got the toddler treatment while Gabriel now looked more like a baby. He shrugged it off as probably being due to his first impression of the fox being how childish he was due to all that crying. Smile reassuringly he gave Gabriel a gentle pat on the shoulder to get the sniffling fox’s attention.
“Come on inside and I’ll explain about my fruit… and Anne’s too. Trust me this only gets weirder.”
“O-okay……”
*********************
After a few minutes of explaining to Gabriel about the powers of the Babu Babu no Mi and the Omocha Omocha no Mi, and dealing with his panic attack at seeing Anne’s plushies up and walking about, the fox seemed to have calmed down a bit… though he still clung to Anne almost instinctively. Meanwhile Beret was busy telling the Elroy’s about what Gabriel had told them about dials for whatever reason. They all sat in the guest room at the moment looking at Gabriel as the fox cuddled into Anne and sucked his pacifier.
“So…” Chouji said “What can you do? Besides the whole Devil Fruit thing?” Gabriel tilted his head to the side a little at that as Chouji rubbed the back of his head “Well… I mean… Anne’s our doctor, I’m our navigator, and Jules is… um…” he looked to the riolu for a little help with that one as Jules rolled his eyes and said “First mate.” Making Chouji nod “Yeah, that. So anyway do you have any special skills or anything?” Gabriel looked down, thinking that over for a moment as his tail swished before looking up and letting his pacifier fall from his mouth as he answered “I c-can cook?”
He immediately had Chouji’s attention. The fishmon was right in Gabriel’s face with a big grin “How well? What style? Can you show us?” Luckily Petie and Jules grabbed him and yanked him away before he traumatized Gabriel too badly. After Anne managed to calm him down a sniffling Gabriel explained “M-me and my mom u-use to cook together all the time…” he said wiping his tears away “S-so I know e-everything she taught me… I h-hope that’s okay.” Gently reaching over to give him an affectionate pat on the head Petie smiled “It’s great, up till now me and Jules were doing the cooking… and mac & cheese most nights was getting boring.” He said as Gabriel managed a small smile and giggle.
“Hi there!”
“…!!”
“Beret!? How the heck did you sneak in here!?”
“Talent!” the giggling smeargle crouched down so she was eye level with Gabriel “Hey there cute witte foxy? Mind if we use those dial things you’ve got in your boat?” she asked in her usual sing song tone of voice. Gabriel clung to Anne not quite sure what to make of Beret, a wise choice in Petie’s opinion, before timidly nodding “S-sure? You d-did save me…” he eeped and clung to Anne again as Beret jumped up and shouted in glee before giggling and swaying back and forth eagerly as she started to talk a mile a minute.
“Awesome! We’re going to use them to make your new ship soooo cool! We’ve got all sorts of ideas like improving the paddle wheel system and adding lighting and making new kind of cannons and” she stopped to take a breath “And it’s gonna be the best ship we’ve ever made! I even got a few ideas of my own that you’re going to love!” she promptly stopped and poked Petie’s nose “And you’re taking on new members right? I was there when you took Gabriel so don’t lie!” caught off guard Petie nodded weakly which made Beret giggle and sway more eagerly “Awesome! I might just join you guys as your shipwright! This is gonna be so much fun!”
With that she scurried out of the room in a fit of giggles leaving the Cuddlebutts crew in a shell shocked state. After digesting what had happened for a moment Petie sighed and put his head in his hands “What have I done…?” as Jules whimpered at the thought of Beret joining the crew. Chouji raised an eyebrow “Think your powers can make heavy duty restraints?” as Gabriel looked to Anne in fear and the cubchoo gently rubbed his back, trying to stay positive “I-I’m sure s-she won’t be THAT bad…”
The look everyone shot her made it clear they didn’t agree.

Fallen from Heaven! Gabriel of Skypiea! “Wait, wait, wait… let me get this all straight… you are getting trained by some retired drunk swordswoman?”
