I got back into DF and man, I love mine carts. I keep shoving them down tracks and they run into children and send them flying and I giggle like an idiot every time.

We need to have a DF themed doodle jam.

I love how much detail the combat reports go into during minecart crashes. Faces grinding against the ground at high speed and whatnot.

Well shit, let's just mix that into everything else we need to draw. GIANT DICKS, MASSIVE TITS, MINECART ACCIDENTS AND DWARVES AHOY!

Only used danger rooms once. 1z level platform over the main gate. if they dodged off, they fell, and could see incoming sieges. no gates or doors.

Hmm, putting it right above the gate is a good idea, keeps them in a position to defend the fort easily ... but wouldn't the constant falling eventually lead to fractures?

I remember once in Adventure mode, I had a fairly powerful character who found himself on the roof of a house after waking up one morning. Only way down was to jump. It was only 1 z-level high, but I somehow fell face-first and jammed my ribs through my heart. FUN! =D

Worse i had was them getting stunned by the minor falls, but that was before the current version. no traps so i didnt have to worry about being blended by *Serrated Steel Disks* x10

Man, I stopped playing DF after a while because I couldn't survive the first few goblin raids. I typically had a full team of archers and such but they'd all get wiped out, leaving me defenseless for the next party to wipe out. I sorta suck at Dwarf Fortress.

I remember when you could defend a fortress with just a small group of archers, but they've been heavily nerfed ever since the 2010 update. Typically the best way to defend against sieges is with close-range fighters and choke points filled with weapon traps. Barring that, you could just design an entrance with a draw bridge to seal yourself off from the outside world and wait it out. Raised bridges seem to count as walls and won't be destroyed by trolls like doors do.

Reminds me of a game I just started playing, 'Dungeons of Dredmore'.

I miss DF, my infected computer runs it too slow now. I wonder if they have expanded heavly on it since I last played.

Oh hell yeah. A new hauling system was just implemented that added minecarts and wheelbarrows. Before that Adventure mode was revamped with massive human cities and necromancer towers. Also included in that update were vampires who would try to infiltrate your fortress, and an overhaul of evil biomes with freakish weather. I once embarked in an area that rained dwarf blood from the skies, and that was one of the more benign things that could happen.

Any good graphical versions that have come along recently?

Not that I'm aware of. Jolly Bastion ( http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/inde.....topic=104261.0 ) seems to be getting a lot of mention, but it's primarily ASCII and I'm not too fond of the color scheme. Too washed out, hard to see.
