For reasons of randomness I haven't seen or been able to photograph any real aurora pictures out here. Well finally, on May 18'th, they were booming. You can see from this picture that they're actually just as bright as the small 20-watt bulb outside of the barn. Plenty of movement and lots of reds. I feel so sorry for anyone who hasn't been able to see these magnificent displays of power. Just try to imagine these rippling miles-high curtains of color, waving in the solar wind. Full-sized picture here.

It's very sad and unfair that only a small fraction of the people of the world get to see these displays. There's absolutely nothing comparable. Even the best lightning displays are still small, fleeting, limited to the clouds. The aurora are HUGE! You can tell they're far above the clouds, many miles high and on the edge of space. And still they move, ripple, wave, dance.
Tells you how well-studied I am in art history, had to look him up. (why do so many "greats" suck so much ass?) I really wish I had a proper big-sky lens. I also wish I had not had to jump up, totally switch tracks, and visitors who I also had to cater to. Mostly the lens though, you know how big the auroras are, BIG! This is the playground of the elder gods. Not the new gods of physics but the older ones of blood and fire.
