Actually, myself I've spent a long time figuring out how to color real sketchy drawings and preserve their sketchiness. Strangely enough, an airbrush, (and the digital counterpart,) seems to be the best tool for the job. Strange because normally the airbrushed look is reserved for sleek clean linework, like illustrations from car ads.
