Dragons have gone the same route as vampires in that it used to be the vampire slayers where the heroes, cus vampires where obviously evil, then people started writing books where the vampires where the good guys, or at least not all bad, and now its more like Van Helsing and the like is comitting hate crimes.
ITs worth keeping in mind that the image of vampires we have is in itself a betrayal of the old romanian legends. Frankly, vampires ought to be closer to Zombies if we're gonna be fundamentalist about it. So I can't really care about the whole sparkle-thing anymore.
As for dragons, Eastern dragons did the whole big and wise thing long before Western dragons, and I supposed that some crossbreeding of the myths was ineviteable. And once Fantasy started introducing dragonriders, all bets where off. It's kinda hard to see dragons as your enemy when it's essentially become your big badass talknig motorcycle.
