Vaguely inspired by a Clyde Caldwell painting of some dragons fighting in a canyon. I wanted to try out some stuff and hopefully learned a batch from doing this one.
The gold is an attempt to try and figure out a design for D&D's not-quite-Eastern-but-not-quite-Western-either gold dragons.

Oh yeah, I remember the inspiring painting! The metallic dragon had ram style horns. It was the cover for one of the 1st edition AD&D Dragonlance modules and for the videogame Dragonstrike. I think the good dragon was supposed to be brass or copper; I forget which kind was drawn with ram horns back then.
Yeah, I was all like OH YEAH IT'S GONNA HAVE A GOLD AND A RED AND IT'LL BE BADASS
And then I was like WAIT REDS HAVE DR RIGHT?
And then I posted it and was like OH I GUESS THESE GUYS ARE BOTH IMMUNE TO EACH OTHERS' BREATH WEAPONS CRAP CRAP CRAP
I dunno. My very very late explanation for my mistake is that these guys are rivals, abutting each others' territory - every now and then one of them will cross the boundary just to see if they can pull it off, and the other will try to chase it away, a little like the way songbirds will harass corvids and owls.
