Seems that there used to be some kind of a rope on the drum, that was pulled by the electrical motor. Maybe there was a ferry sometime before?

Anyways, nice photograph! I really love to see and capture photos the industrial remains like that, they make one feel... I don't know, the feebleness of what seems so solid and powerful as modern technology?
