For those few of you who have been following my journals, I have finally finished rewinding the magneto armature! It makes a nice hot spark for sure!
This armature came out of a Bosch ZEV mag, and when the entire mag is completed, it's going on a 1914 Indian motorcycle. The problem is that the ZEV is a shuttle-wound mag, meaning that the coil spins around will the magnets stay still. This is not the first ZEV I've rebuilt so I can safely say that these mags are difficult to work with!
So I finished rewinding the coil yesterday, and this morning I completely potted the coil with epoxy. It's not as pretty as the professional rewound magnetos armatures, but I find that it performs just as well and is much more durable. Also, I installed a new condenser in the base of armature and potted it as well. Now I just have to finish restoring the rest of the magneto!
Here are the specs of the finished armature:
Primary:
# of turns: 152 (160 originally)
Gauge: 21
Layers: 4
Secondary:
# of turns: approx. 7,200
Gauge: 45
Layers: 25
Length of wire used: approx. 2,600 ft.
Condenser: Wima FKP 1
Value: .22uf
Voltage: 400 VDC
