Did you ever read any of those L'il Abner stories where Abner grew hideously fat? Or the town of Dogpatch would be starving, so they'd chow down on "mud mushrooms" (found only in some cave peculiar to Dogpatch) and all bloat up to look like dirigibles? Al Capp returned to this idea again and again, leading me to think he must have had a very hungry childhood...
