Many action game titles today such as; Lost Planet, Condemned, Gears of War, Hellgate London, etc etc, are set in the future but to help engross the player in the future, there is a large amount of the past in ruin surrounding the player. This is the current trend I believe. It's not really so much of a trend as it is a helpful visual narrative, to establish "future" you must show the "past" destroyed. Makes sense right?
A lot of times (not always though) when I come across people's game assets either at school or on public sites there is an absence of certain detailed elements which makes it of less quality than what the industry is currently expecting. I avidly studied Gears of War and tried making this broken column up to snuff with that level of detail.
Whipped this up yesterday and finished some finer details today. I've been wanting to make a new environment lately and I'm fixed on a theme of dessication. I am trying to decide between something subtle and fantastic locations though. I'll do some more assets which should help me decide, some church pews, altar pieces, broken marble archways and columns then go from there. This asset would go someplace like a subway, or.... library? I guess... not too terribly sure.
Where would you expect to see a concrete column?
Minus the following:
- parking garage
- sewer

yeah... what can one say when presented with something which has an enormous amount of absurdity in its premise but at the same time makes you completely believe you are in every sense immersed within that world. Bioshock is the subject matter here, where its done so well you believe the unbelievable. I should perhaps pick it up sometime.
