You might want to try using Virtualdub to record and edit these. It's not super user friendly but it's free. http://virtualdub.org/ However a dedicated Direct Draw recorder like FRAPS or PlayClaw is of course far better. You can DL demos of them to see if they work for you. That and always record in 16:9. Black boarders are never nice! ;p
Actually, scratch everything. MSI Afterburner is not only free, records off direct draw very quickly without hindering the game, but also can compress on the fly so the file sizes aren't nowhere near as monstrous as FRAPS. Did I also mention it's free? Oh, AND it's an overclocking tool for video cards so you try getting a bit more power out of your machine if you can keep it cool.
