Well, I am at a loss of content to upload, so here is a crazy computer I am building! It is a bitcoin mining rig, pretty much a computer that uses graphics cards to perform financial and cryptography calculations and helps to support the bitcoin digital currency. It has been really fun, and a pretty decent income source too, I get a cut of the transactions that get processed! If you want more info on Bitcoins, check out: https://www.weusecoins.com
Specs:
In the case: 2x Radeon 5830
Outside the case in the GPU sandwich: Radeon 5870 (my new baby!) and a 5850.
(Dont worry, there is a gap between the two for breathing room)
Bitchin' Coolermaster 1200 watt PSU.
8-core AMD FX-8120 "bulldozer"
Lejit 200mm red LED fan (makes the computer faster)

I've been planing to build a new computer soon, my old one is getting pretty old...
Here's the parts I've been looking at so far:
- SuperMicro H8QGL-iF motherboard
- Cooler Master HAF-932 Advanced case
- ??x Hynix DDR3-1600 8GB ECC/REG RAM (More can be added later, board has 16 slots)
- ?x AMD 62xx CPU (Up to 4, how many and which ones depending on what I find a good deal on, but definitely the 16-core versions)
- ?x EVGA GeForce GTX 680 (start with one, add more over time as price permits until I have four - I may need to use riser cables past two?)
- Not sure what storage, maybe a big SSD I guess?
- Ultra X4 1600 PSU (Lifetime warranty if you register it! And even if I have 4x 6282 CPUs and 4x video cards all doing their things full-tilt, it should have absolutely no trouble powering them.)
- Keyboard: Probably my IBM Model M, or /maybe/ a Unicomp Customizer 104.
- Cooling: Considering trying something similar to this, would probably put blocks on both the CPUs and video cards if I did. I'd want to find a better way to protect against condensation than they used, though.
(Yes, I know ATI cards are generally considered better at mining than NVidia cards, but last I heard ATI cards tend to majorly suck at OpenGL compared to NVidia cards, and I'd like to use this for things like SL and gaming and such...)

Well, part of it is I just don't know that much about ATI cards, just that they used to suck at OpenGL stuff compared to NVidia ones. And I've heard that the ATI drivers aren't always particularly good...
I hear the HD 7970 is good for gaming, but I have no idea how it compares with a GTX 680. (A lot slower? Close enough that it shouldn't matter?)
Yes, the board/CPU/ram are technically meant to be some hefty server hardware, but they should be good for other stuff too, even if I have to do some... "adjustments"... to remove some artificial limits in Win7 to make it use more than 2 "physical CPUs"/sockets. (Windows Server 2008 wouldn't have this limit, but a lot of games might get confused by it, and I think my A/V doesn't work on it unless you buy the more expensive business version...)
So far I've got the HAF932 case (got a remanufactured one cheap off eBay), a 1TB HDD (turns out my dad had a spare one left over from his last build...), and a DVD+-RW/RAM (same). Found a site that has the suggested RAM cheap ($69/stick), still looking on some of the other stuff.

I hear that the ATI/ NVida battles are pretty much even performance wise, there are just a few subtle differences. All I have used are Radeons, since they mine bitcoin nearly 50x faster than anything else and I don't game on PC or anything...
Gotta love the HAF, I love my 912, but I am probably going to eventually ditch it for an open-air frame that will hold the GPU's a bit nicer... get them off those cardboard sandwiches, haha.
Nice to chat with another rig builder!

The main reasons I wend with the HAF932 is that A) it's supposed to have good airflow, but mostly B) supposedly the SWTX motherboard I'm looking at will fit in it, from what I've read on forums, although I may have to mess with the standoffs to make them all line up right. (SWTX = massive board)
I was looking at these for when I start running into trouble fitting video cards in, although instead of hanging out the back, I might try extending the case around the slots area to accomodate the extra cards. Maybe some sort of mounting cage that sticks out where that set of side fans is, then attach those to the cage, and just stick the side panel on over it all, I'll have to look how it's put together and see...
The main trick is going to be getting money for parts I think.

oh murrr XP thats hawt, just a quick question, im too poor to afford a huge rig n stuff like that but where can i find a cheap but usable graphics card to mine with? ive heard of using asic usb miners but they usualy run about less than a ghz , but would they still b a good thing to mine with?
