While I am a book-lover, I’m a big fan of going out and collecting my own references when possible. It is, in my opinion, good to unplug, get out of the studio, and take a field trip once in a while.
Now, while my preferred subject matter is fantasy, that does not mean that I don’t have a whole freaking lot to learn from the natural world, so, when possible, I take trips to the zoo and do life sketches, head to the museum and take photograps, and head out into nearby parks to immerse myself in nature.
Most of my sketches and photos are… well, they’re not bad. They’re not great though. The photos in particular are there just to be references; composition and such isn’t taken into consideration. However, this particular shot isn’t too bad, so I thought that I’d share it. Maybe it’ll be of interest to someone else studying such things too.

*nods... nods* I dont have many favorite extinct animals, but I always make sure to say hello to the friendliest big cat skeleton at the museum.. SMILEodon. Now if I ever found exhibits for Irish wolves, Javan Tigers, or a Giant Ground Sloth... I'd have a bajillion photos of them and would hang them on my walls!
Ah, Faith...have you lost weight? Nah I kid.
I've been playing D&D for a while now, and I remember my surprise to learn that dire wolves were actual RL animals. Heck, in D&D there are dire wolves, hawks, bears, all manner of predatory animals, and I never thought that one of them was real. Then again, maybe it shouldn't have surprised me, with all the animals that have come and gone over the course of history.

Nashoba, I know you might like this:

I intend to get one of these for the forks on my motorcycle, and decorate it with Garou glyphs and such. I like it because it's anatomically accurate, and environmentally responsible, i.e., not a real piece of history, so you can "play" with it without feeling like you are destroying something historically significant.
And yes, also pricey, but hey...
