I like to think that in Nanaki's culture, the more feathers, colored and white, bracelets, face markings, and jewelry show prowess in fighting and the community. As a younger cat Nanaki only has two feathers, small bracelets, and two earrings. As you see in the end, Nanaki sports a full headdress with all colored feathers, more evident face markings, and larger bracelets showing his effort for saving the planet.
