This sweet little vixen was the victim of a hit and run driver 2006-Sep-16. She was found about 4:00pm and was quite fresh. She is about 5 months old and a very pretty little girl. Location: about 100 yards north of the Dome Rock entrance to Muller State Park (Colorado) along SH-61 on the east side of the road at about 9,700 feet above sea level.

I have 19 more photos of this girl and will probably post them all on my website.

Wow that was quick!
Yea, I hope someone can use her image. Last year (about August) a red fox vixen got hit by a car and crawled up into our driveway to die. I didn't see her until after noon and she was kinda smelly by that time. It was trash pickup day so she got the ignoble "burial". :- Mentioned this on a message board and people said, "Did you take photos?" So...

I skinned her and will be trying the brain tanning method. While wet scraping the skin I nicked my finger so I salted the skin and put it back in the fridge. Her brains are in the fridge too. I'll get back to skin scraping later tonight (I'm nocturnal). My first hair-on tanning project and I did okay, but it's not perfect--I nicked the edge of her right eye lid, the back legs are a bit raggidy looking, and I put a small hole in the top of her tail.
She has whiskers on her wrists. I read that about red foxes, but they are too fine to show up in photos.

She had a tiny hole in the skin over her left hip and she'd lost a bit of blood through her nose. Her fur was very soft and clean with only a few pine sap drips. The blow must have "broken" her central nervous system. I didn't palpate her back, neck or ribcage. There was no obvious bruising or blood pooling beneath her skin as you might expect if she'd lived awhile after being hit. I think she died quickly.
People drive waaaay too fast on CR-61. It's 8 miles long, gravel, and 35 MPH in most places except where this girl was hit it was 25 MPH. Some people will do 50 or more in front of our cabin (near the south end of the road). The road is all tore up because people drive too fast.
This was in Teller county, Colorado (the west side of Pikes Peak). Our home is in Colorado Springs (El Paso country), Colorado (the east side of Pikes Peak).

Makes me sad, poor lil' girl. *would make a sign "Slow Down! A life is more important than you being late!"*
Anyway great reference, please post the other photos. its hard to find good living reference of animals, but i would rather have your respectful photos than some hunter grinning over the corpse.
