One of my other favorite programs to tinker about with is Bryce5. Its more basic that a lot of the other 3-d modeling programs, like Maya or Softimage, as you use predefined objects that you "link" togther to create new shapes. It was designed more for quick, complex landscaping, but if you play around with it, you can do a lot of things with it.

Since DAZ bought Bryce from Corel, they've release v5 for about $30 in most software stores. Though, its just the old Corel version repackaged with no paper manual and the same odd quirks that it has with XP. But, for playing around with the program, you can't really beat the price.
They're also releasing a v5.5 that's designed for XP and has new features, but its about $200. A bit out of my range for something to tinker with.
