That trumps me by about 5 years. Heh. :D Looking back at how "Furry" was structured back then, and even moreso for you 5 years before that, things sure have changed. Not really for the better, if you ask me :X
Pic = true, but only if someone pushes forward without viewing it as commercial. Once you get suckered into commissions non-stop, the improvement graph starts to taper off.

The days of Geocities, Tripod and Angelfire as well as Furnation seem to be long gone before people flocked over to art sites like DA and others... Back then, people used whatever search engine to find other similar websites or have them join a website ring so each similar site was linked together... Things were kinda simpler back then, but I don't miss the annoying dialup connection... I still have my old site I had around during my high school days up for nostalgia value: http://www.angelfire.com/anime3/foxworld/
As for the pic... I learned too late you don't need a diploma to prove that you're an artist, you only need a portfolio and a demo reel if you want to do animations... With online tutorials around Youtube and DA, art colleges are almost obsolete. Diplomas are only necessary to prove you know your stuff if you want to be a doctor for example.

Compared to what we have today, it's nothing special since barely anyone knew how to build a site properly and most sites looked amateurish. It didn't help most images and videos and songs had to be 1/10 of a Megabyte for them to load up fast for people on dial-up connections (We had to connect online through a phone, took forever to connect and even longer to download anything. Imagine browsing online with barely a single bar on wifi, you had to be patient to be able to do anything online). As inconvenient and slow as it was, I still kind of miss it as it was simpler and it was sort of the wild west days of the internet before more people flocked online.
This is a glimpse of what we had: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWq4DWfrpu8
This was one of many sites I went to during middle school/college: http://web.archive.org/web/20010602.....den.com/foxes/
This was my old website I used to run during high school before going to DA: http://www.angelfire.com/anime3/foxworld/
