The same Jumper from yesterday was still there today, but much lower to the ground. I was able to get closer and got some 1:1 shots this time, which looked a lot more clear than yesterday's zoomed crop.
I experimented with smaller apertures, but light wasn't on my side (in a bit of an alcove), and this spider was not really in position to use a tripod (which I didn't have on me anyway).
She was jumpy too. :P
Her eyes seem to have a bit of a greenish tinge.
She's also munching on something. Not sure what.

A lot of times, I just guess. I tend to assume a spider is female unless it's obviously a male.
A spider becomes obviously male if it has ridiculously huge palps on the end of its pedilaps (the little arm things it has by its face).
With some species of spiders, it's quite easy due to massive sexual dimorphism. Take Golden Silk Orb Weaver females have a legspan of about 5 inches. The males barely measure a few centimeters.

Jumping spiders aside from the harvestmen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvestman) are two spiders I'm not really that afraid of. I like jumpers. They always look like they're up to something. Both species are really darn neat creatures. The thing that's fun (and mildly creepy) I found out more recently is that jumpers have the ability to move their retina much like a human moves his eyes without turning the head. If you look right at one you'll see it changing colors as they move their eyes looking at things. If it turns very dark, it's looking straight at you since that's the retina part itself. And they're naturally curious little critters. :)
Definitely an active predator like the wolf spider. Those large binocular eyes are a dead giveaway.
Though the orb-weavers are still my favorites. I come from South Carolina where argiope spiders are just about everywhere.
I was making deliveries early one morning and very nearly walked right into an 18-foot wide argiope web with a 2-3 inch spider in the middle!

I have to say out of all your images, this one scares me silly as I have a huge fear of spiders since being bitten by one, but I'm trying to get over it :)
I really admire your macro shots, it's something I'm still trying to get to grips with myself... I did a foundation degree in traditional photography and the step over to digital is a nightmare (stick me in a dark room please!)
If you have any tips/tricks please IM me
Keep up the great work!

I got stung by a wasp right next to my eye as well. I actually saw him coming, but it was too late. I opened the sliding glass door, next thing you know I see this little black thing fly right next to me and bam! Stung. Felt like Iron Man flicked my eye really hard. :(

How small was this bugger?
I was driving home yesterday, pulled into my drive, looked to the left and noticed a fuzzy little bump on the top of my door against the window just staring at me. At first I was like "WTF!" but then I realized it was a fsking jumping spider!!! It was minuscule! and quite firm on staring me down! XD It disappeared in the time I slowly slipped out of my car to get my camera and flash out of the back...
It was black with some red on the top of it's abdomen. I wish it didn't run off... would have been a very COOOOOOOOOOOOOOL picture...
It was the first I've ever seen IRL in that type of setting, I didn't know there were any native to this area! XD I hope I find another one soon.. =/
