So I'm working up to starting Ventus. The script for part 1 is complete, I've got pages upon pages of thumbnails ready to go. I was testing page 1, to see how I might go about doing the linework (I'll worry about shading after that, and coloring comes later.)
BUT before I get completely engrossed in this, I wanted to get a bit of feedback. This is a sample of some of the linework. My document size is huge right now...10.5 by 15.5 inches (the size of the drawing area on a printed comic sheet) and currently is at 600 ppi (I know that's ridiculously large, but I find I get crisper lines that way, cause I can't use the pen tool to save my life. This here has been sized back to 300, since that's probably the size I'd use for web viewing.)
I guess what I'm asking (behind this wall of text) is, does it look alright? Line width, the illusion of depth or any sort of dimensionality (pretend that's a word), or should I add more large black areas for a bit of comic style shading (shading will otherwise be cell shading, which will be applied before the comic is posted online. Color is another matter and again, comes later), are the lines too jittery or do they look alright, does it look like something you could stand to look at through a whole novel.
Anything.
If you can think of anything at all to say that could potentially be helpful, I want to hear it. Bear in mind, I may not actually need to use ALL the information, I just want a general idea of what different people think. Even if its negative, but if it is, at least attempt to be constructive about it XD
Many thanks in advance!
Note: At this point, the movement or artistic quality of this particular picture means very little to me. You can comment or critique on it if you like, but it is an unfinished panel, so that's a lot you're missing as of now. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
Edit: So the wonderful
CanineHybrid and an artist by the username of glasswhistle on Nabyn gave me a bit of feedback and opinions. Riley suggested I try a bit more line variation, and Glasswhistle was unsure of some of the line width (I can understand why, it was so simple earlier, it did look a bit like just a heavy handed mistake) and commented on backgrounds in an image like this.
With their combined opinions (and my ever-faithful left brain
DracheMetzger checking my progress and giving me pointers) I produced what we both believe is a much better result. So, on the left top is the original. On the right is the new one, with more variation, and some depth added at points and such.
The bottom two are based on the background comment. As this is a very close-up scene, the background is extremely simple (there will be a second character further back, but most of the area will be visible). I just thought it might make it easier to get an idea of the line work with a bit of environment to go with it.
