At our house we have a simple sign: "No Salesmen or Advocates of Religion" It's been there for decades.
It works on most everyone except kids pushing stale candy (because they are told by their adult suppliers that they aren't "soliciting").
In the very few cases where an adult knocks on the door anyway, I point out the sign and close the door. No discussion; no argument; no goodbye.
They don't come back.
