Read the NWC myth about the valley of shadows and started thinking about evil spirit/monster versions of certain prominent characters. It worked really well in my head, because a lot of NWC myths are kinda dark. You could probably twist them to make a horror story like you can twist fairytales (which also, when not censored, tend to be kinda dark...or very dark).
