Design and loading/installing was a bitch, took time/work. Software: Not too hard (I'm an
ex-programmer). Not-a-website, remember. Just a DB, some code, and a huuuuge
pile of subs on FA. But sorta acts like a website, no?
Software's gotten more complex, DB's gotten bigger, but actual workload is low. Just a
few hours a week. At least for now. All kudos to Sphinx, FA's search engine, without
which this project couldn't happen.
More features are planned--whup, time to write some more code--since this thing's really
only so useful right now. Or that well-known. We'll see how 2014 goes.*

TY tha respect. Furry or not, we all need it more'n oxygen. Okay, maybe oxygen
comes first. :- )
Note the long-range Battle Plan here. Respect is one of the keywords. As in, how can
writers and poets on FA score some more of it? Job One: Make it easier to *find*
'em, dammit. Dudes and dudettes who built FA missed this point.
Can't read what ya don't know exists. But that's not all there is to it. FA seems
to work differently for writers and poets than for artists, and only some of that's
flexible. Job Two: Beat brains out unto unconsciousness trying to understand
whuffo. Then groan, probably write more code...
There's a FAWD v2.0 in the planning stages, maybe for late 2014. V1.0 has to sink
it's sharp tiny chompers into this place first. Does it all just come down to how, and
why, people *value* furlit around here? (Working theory: Yes). So whazzit about
FA that unintentionally influences--or degrades--that? (A lot!! $#&%@&!!)
Nothing like biting off more than you can chew, eh? Wait: Fangs, I got fangs,
don't I? And a knife... :- >

Think this is one of those projects that just has to creep up on everybody, over a
period of time. And works best that way. FA = Damn big. At least half the furs
here will have minor-to-zero interest in this.
Basic job is make furlit more accessible (and valued), and give writers and
poets more exposure. Or anybody who writes. Tall order. FA = Too
damn big :- )
Heh. As for being part of Admin, you'll notice the size of the knife my avatar
carries. Oooo, a chance to *use* it... :- >

fwbrown61 Yeah, a thing of beauty, I say. But then maybe I'm biased.*
Looking for useful on top of nice. May have got that right, but we'll see just how
that goes. Should see user traffic (and the reviews) tick up over the next few
months.
fwbrown61(* And possibly with an incredibly weird sense of beauty. :- ) )
Actually, the way things are set up, nobody needs to do nuthin' about anything. Could say
the FAWD is similar to the telephone directory (without the phone bill).
As in, you get a phone number. Your phone number is listed. That's it. Your work here is
done (not that you did any in the first place). Or need to do any more.
Same principle with the FAWD, and just about as automatic. A new writer posts his/her first
story or poem. Sphinx, FA's search engine, spots it, and the name is added. Then a notice PM
goes out to say so (which is as close to asking first as we can get).
Even smoother, Sphinx will also spot new work posted by someone already on the list. Action: An
update of those work-posted numbers beside that person's name. And that's it; work done. 'Cause no
more is needed.
Every Friday Sphinx is sent out searching for new story and poetry posts. And an update run happens.
'S all invisible to everyone on the list. As it should be. Could be the only time you'll hear about the
FAWD is when someone tells you they used it to find your stories or poetry.
I have no problem with that whatsoever. :- )
Did this help?
fwbrown61
Sure did! Just out of curiousity (new programmer to a programmer) how long did it take to create such a software? Theoretically it's logic is easy, but as far as we know. Its not quite always as simple as put.
Sounds like a SQL-database-like way of storing data. Hope it progress's and you get recognition!
Sounds like a SQL-database-like way of storing data. Hope it progress's and you get recognition!
Here's where people go bwahaha. This all started by looking at a page of Search results.
How do I get all those names into a spreadsheet? Wanted to study stories and
take notes.
I turned to WordPerfect 7. A word processor; rich tool for handling text. And with an
excellent 'n rich macro facility. Wrote a macro to parse out a saved HTML page and
produce a list of names and other data.
That was easy. A list of names, did you you say? What else can we do with this idea?
Hack code program. Quite a lot, it seems. By *not* jumping at a DBMS/SQL-based
solution I had the basic model of the FAWD system prototyped within a couple
of weeks.
Upgrade, and more code, followed. How to generate a list page? Another macro.
How to automate posting of a list page? Another macro. How to maintain a batch
of files containing lists of names? Another macro. The 'unit of data' here is
the list page, not the username. One [small] file per list page.
Then serious study of Sphinx, FA's search engine, unlocked things. Some hard pounding
at Search and Browse could give me the names of everyone on FA who's posted a
story or poem. More macros to automate things further.
That also gave me the technique to do the search query links (Tha ALL GGG MMM AAA
thngs) which are the heart of the FAWD, to tell the truth.
In short, for about a year, the FAWD was backed up by WordPerfect 7. Worked great. Go
figure.
Then I tripped over AutoHotKey. This is a hellish sweet macro facility for Windows. V. useful,
can control anything going on in Windows. And the language has a great deal of data
processing horsepower. Made a *lot* of the automated tasks even more so, esp.
dealing with FA.
(The FAWD talks to FA through Opera, driven by AHK. No PHP or Javascript, or talking
directly to the server, 'cause didn't know how.)
Port, port, port. WordPerfect can retire. A batch of AHK programs now runs things, and tres
smoother. Even with this file-based scheme, the FAWD can now grow perhaps triple what it is
now before before a port to a proper DBMS is necessary.
Job over the summer is upgrade further, and improve the operator interface so other people
can run this monster. Still a little finicky. Needs moah smooth.
From a programming PoV, a moderately neat hack, but can't be more. I've done this sort of
work before, so a lot of typing was done with eyes closed. To give away my age, I honestly
thought about doing it up in COBOL; ideal language for this sort of stuff.
Also one I know with eyes closed, which tells you about the work I've done.
Notice, however, from the length of this note, just how lousy I am at doing documentation. :- )

thought about doing it up in COBOL; ideal language for this sort of stuff.
Also one I know with eyes closed, which tells you about the work I've done.
Notice, however, from the length of this note, just how lousy I am at doing documentation. :- )

Very nice, that's the thing about programs like that. There is MOST likely an easier approach. So you simply just discarded the WordPerfect program? Hell I'm sure you could 'publish' /share that (not to sound like a free-loader, I am not into such software. I'm getting into game-development for Android) for the advancement of it. Honestly never heard of WordPerfect, I'll look it up after I send this message.
Anyways, sounds like you put a great-deal of time invested into this! Never thought of using AutoHotKey for such a task. Hell, when I first tried it, I used it to easily open up programs that I usually got into when I started up the pc. Windows 8 makes it a bit easier to switch around. Now that I have my second computer screen, I have made ALOT more progress.
Think you could format it for other sites? Deviantart.com, weasyl.com, etc.? FurAffinity isn't quite known for it's story-writers. As I just changed my option of seeing adult art, and I'm now spammed by dicks. But I would think it would take a fair more time for other sites, since there are ALOT more diverse artists out there.

We-ll, it's possible someone out there might be interested in a few pages of entirely mundane
code written in an obscure programming language based on a dead word processor
(WordPerfect 7 is whompingly obsolete; still greatly useful to me).
But I kinda doubt it. :- )
WP 7 was just easy as pie to work with, and ideally suited to text processing (there are far
better languages out there). Allowed me to bang out prototype code in no time flat,
refine it to beta, then put it into production without messing around.
Seriously, the FAWD looks pro (because it is), but as the pros measure these things the
FAWD merely qualifies as a moderately neat hack, Under the hood the gerbils on the wheel
aren't doing anything at all new; quite traditional data processing work. Although
they are pretty smart gerbils. :- )
AHK is an oddball for this, agreed. Thing is, dealing with FA through a browser is a bottleneck.
So why why not write a special-purpose Javascript applet for Opera to implement some
functions? (Thought about Chrome too; much easier development environment).
Wait: Here's this macro package called AHK that can make Opera do backflips. And more.
I *like* it. Waaay easier. Make it so, screams the bald starship Captain.
And the AHK language is sweet, powerful, and more than capable enough. You can build
apps with AHK. Looitthat: I just did.
At the core, this is all just basic list management; as said, mundane. What's unique is where and
how the FAWD gets data: Essentially from Sphinx, FA's search engine, that goes running around
finding story and poetry posts.
Then there's the equally unique task of generating properly formatted and linked list pages--text
files-then posting them into some 800 FA submission comment boxes ('S all this thing is,
remember).
This model might work on other, more modern websites. But I have my doubts. Looked at Weasyl
and SoF. Don't think the way their search engines work would allow for search query links. Among other
things. (The key FAWD feature: the ALL GGG MMM AAA links that call up people's work.)
Irony: The fact that FA *isn't* a more modern website is largely what makes the FAWD doable.
On other websites I suspect that this monster would have to run on the server. The FAWD does not.
Maybe a little better hack than it looks. :- )
fwbrown61People ask questions, I get a chance to explain. Which helps when other people ask questions.
Got off a good riff with your questions, I think.
When/if Phoenix sinks it's [more modern] beak into FA, I'm expecting to get some bad surprises.
That may just mean some redesign and rebuild. Or Phoenix could make it impossible to do the
FAWD on FA.
Changes to Sphinx, for example, could be fatal. And the look-and-feel of the FAWD relies on a
precision formatting technique that's linked to how text is handled and displayed on FA. (Did
a slightly overwritten write-up about this here: TEXT VERSION OF THE FAWD LOGO)
Phoenix is out to upgrade FA to the standard set by Weasyl and SoF (among others).
In a word: Uh oh...
If you know of people who have serious coding chops, and who can interpret the work that Phoenix
is posting over on GitHub, I *desperately* wanna talk.
If I can get an advance understanding of all that lot, I may be able to avoid some tank fire that
I suspect is incoming. Be nice to talk to the Phoenix folks, of course, but that ain't gonna happen
in the lifetime of this Universe (or any other), so no point trying.
Yah, this project just got fun. :- )

Well I personally don't know any other programmers sadly. I will be (trying to) going to college for computer programming. But I found this website and maybe this individual will reply. Because I have asked many people for help, but never wrote back.
http://scheinerman.net/jonah/phoenix.html
Also, I have not looked at StackOverFlow.com to see if there is a group for Phoenix writers. If I catch wind of any such group, I will definitely keep you in mind and link the page, or emails(personally write to you, I don't like to share email addresses.)

Nah, you didn't get picked for your crap. (Now *there's* a sentence I never thought I'd
ever type. :- ) )
The battle plan here is find everyone on FA who writes. Anything. Objective: Up the chances
that readers can find writers, and stories and poetry, they want to read.
This should be easier on FA. It isn't. Well, maybe it's a little easier now. Moah work needed.
One small step, yadda yadda.
*What* people have written, or if it's any good, CANNOT be something the FAWD pays
attention to. 'Cause can't read everything, so won't try, 'cause I need my eyeballs
for a few more years yet. :- )
Let the readers decide if the stuff's good to read, not the FAWD. Someone posts a story
or poem, that says stone-solid that *they* think it's worth reading. And that they're at least
somewhat serious about writing.
Do I need to know more? Nope. Ping! Listed. Suppose it calls for some faith that that story
ot poem actually has something to it. Or to put it differently, the FAWD is a writers directory,
not a We-Think-These-Stories-Are-Righteous-'N-Worthy directory.
You'll notice that a helluva lot of them are. The ones that just get points for trying, heck, that
could just mean there's better work ahead. In which case that person is already listed. Timesaver.
Went a little long on you here; bad habit. Still, did this help?
fwbrown61 Bullseye; ya got it in one. There's no practical way to judge whether any given story or
poetry post is worth reading. And it's hellish arrogant to think that I *could* judge.
(Or want to).
Good or bad? That's really making a judgment call. Even if the FAWD was that
kind of project, a sizable staff would be needed, of at least semi-pro grade
(and probably paid). Nope: One fur here. Plus two cats and a dog. :- )
And y'never know, I might have to make a call or two like that, about whether or not
to list somebody. (Ie., a story post that intended to harass or troll). My cute
'lil avatar may get to use that knife, stabby, stabby.
But the way it stands right now, somebody who posts a story or poem is saying
they're willing--and want--to have other people to read it. Presumably they've
also put some serious work into it. No story or poem types itself.
Does that make that somebody a writer? 'Course not. Might be the only thing they
they write. But it *does* qualify them for a listing here. Writer enough (regardless of
what their artist type says).
The readers are the only ones who can judge. Best the FAWD can do is list someone,
and give the readers a chance to *find* 'em.
There: Shorter. We-ll, maybe not. But clearer; that'll have to do. :- )
