Heh, as cool as that would be, the actual origin of his name was in World of Warcraft. I first played a blood-elf mage, hence bloody magus. And then that basically became a second name for me after playing for a while. I didn't create a 'sona until after I did a race change of that character to Worgen (a race of werewolves in case you don't know about the game lore) so I went with it here.
I believe the lore was that they were/are high elves, but their race was slaughtered out of fear by the Alliance at some point (I think post-Archimonde invasion maybe). The survivors started calling themselves "blood elves" as a tribute to those who were killed or as a vow for revenge or something along those lines. I don't remember the exact reasoning.
I looked up a bit more of the blood elves' back-story after posting and I was slightly mistaken. The high elves were nearly wiped out by the scourge and Arthas (in Warcraft 3) and most took on the name blood elves afterward. However, they were still basically driven out of the Alliance due to racial prejudice, which can be seen in the Warcraft 3 expansion campaigh. And that's part of why they are allied with the Horde in World of Warcraft.
Also, I believe the factions are more neutral and opposing forces than one being inherently good and the other bad.

Nope. It was the human who took charge of the remaining survivors of Lordaeron that had something against the blood elves. http://www.wowpedia.org/Blood_elves probably does a much better job of explaining the full back-story than me. I'm basically paraphrasing a bunch of the info that is there and skipping some of the details in the process.
