The Mayans declared December 21, 2012 as the end of the world. Well, guess what? The Mayan calender did not include leap year. Taking that into account, if our calendar progressed without leap year, then it would be mid-May of 2013 already!
What say you to that?

I did not know that about the Mayan calander, but now that I think about it, of course they didn't factor in "leap year". That wasn't made and inplemented until much, much later. Wow, I'm surprised that hadn't occured to me earlier, but then again I've dismissed the whole "Mayan calander says the world ends in 2010" since the beginning. So if the world actually followed the Mayan calander, we would indeed be past the end of world date, and we are still here. Unfortunately, those who believe the end of the world is nigh are also usually not ones to use logic to come to conclusions.
The media is more powerful than in most places in the West (Canada, USA mostly, but also starting to crop up in EU)
People seem to enjoy being scared, or maybe just like overly dramatic sensationalist media. Imagine the intelligence of the average person, then realize, half the world is dumber.... I wouldn't be surprised that they follow whatever the guy on the magic box says.

Me too. On December 22nd, I'm going to put a picture up on here saying:
"'Holy crap, we're still alive.'
- 70% of the world"
And the picture will be of the Earth with a thousand little speak-trails leading to it. Because seriously, WAY too many people think an arbitrary calendar date chosen by an ancient people is the end.
