While not required, Quaylak also provided some story to go with the image:
She was ready. It had taken weeks for her to recover from the wounds she'd mysteriously received during her exploration of the forest. Rooth had discovered the fallen unicorn not far from his home. Her hind leg had been bitten and was swollen with infection. He feared that whatever had thought it necessary to attack the elder unicorn may return for her, so he carried her away.
The attacker never came back, or at least, it did not follow them. At first, he wondered if he'd been too late. The unicorn showed little signs of improving and the wound only seemed to get worse. But with his constant attention and knowledge of medicinal herbs (and maybe a little magic), her leg began to heal. The wounds stopped bleeding long enough for him to stitch them up and lay minty salves on them daily. The day he returned home and saw her standing on her own was the day he knew she was ready to return to the wild.
Dawn was the time to take her outside and release her back into the world. It would give her a full day of sunlight to find her strength. He carried her gently in his arms until he reached the edge of the forest. Just beyond the trees was an ocean of grassy hills and open plains that were slowly being blanketed by the warmth of the rising sun. It was here that he knelt to the ground and helped her stand. It was here that he unwrapped her once gnarled leg and used his hand to help keep her steady on her feet. It was here that he watched her take her first few steps, as if she were a newborn.
And it was there that he saw her for the last time.
There's more, but you'll need to click on the original post to see it. Quaylak has some deets about the unicorn itself.
And as I said in Quaylak's journal: I love this. I love that it shows the tender, compassionate side of Rooth before all hell breaks loose in the subsequent pages in the near future of the story. There's a lot of drama and violence to be had in those pages -- this works nicely for balance.
Mmm, and leaves some hooks, too. What could have bitten her? What could have left her long enough for Rooth to find her? HOW did Rooth find her? Did his magic work? What happens to her next?
Well done. :) This is what Project Storyline is all about -- introducing a fixed point in time, and a bunch of questions for the next artist to feed off of.
