I recall reading about a jet pilot in an F-104 who managed to scatter himself and the aircraft over a wide swath of the countryside because he was following the Planet thinking it was some sort of intruding aircraft. A jet had passed above his plane earlier and caused an atmospheric distortion that made the planet look twice as large as normal.
