While I still haven't managed to recover all of the art I had started (and promised) to folks, I did manage to start a new piece as a little gift for a dear friend of mine.

It starts with lines, then works underneath that layer, adding colors and such until it looks right. I start with a redline sketch and work under it.

So lines are important, but how do you handle removing them later on? How do you do the thing with the lightning to make things still look separated from one another?

I use paint tool sai, so I get to work in clear layers, then merge them later. I do the sketch, then color in a layer underneath the sketch lines. As for making things look separate, it's all in shading where there would be shading under the jacket and the like, but on top of the fur. I use a LOT of layers when I work, then simply delete the line layer and merge the rest when I'm done. :)
