This is the third version of the prologue to my novel. I've completely rewritten it, there were three glaring fundamental problems that had to be altered. Firstly the vehicle, which plays a role in the plot later on, was distinctly un-Australian and therefore innacurate. Secondly I had the elite soldiers having a conversation in the middle of a mission, which would never ever happen. Also the dialogue made them come across as psychopaths which was unnecesary to the story, so it had to go. Thirdly, this prologue is the readers first impression of the story, and decides if they'll stick with it or not. That timestamp at the beginning is reflective of when I first started writing this novel, and I've grown up a lot since then, so I polished things up accordingly. It has to make sense to a non-furry fandom audience as well as us.
Hopefully this will be the last major revision of the damn thing, now those big changes are fixed.
For those who don't know, probably most of you, I've been working on a science fiction/alternate history novel since late 2008. It's furry themed, involving both normal sized and 30 metre tall furs, who are locked in a sort of cold war with humans, until one decides to join and help them.
More then three years later it's still a work in progress, with 631 pages and 353,041 words and counting. Nooo idea when it'll be finished, long time away. When it's done you'll all be the first to know.
If you beg me reeeal hard, maybe I'll go through it, find a chapter I'm especially proud of and post it for you to read!
Comments are greatly appreciated! *makes kitty eyes*

Thanks for reading! What do you mean by a historical standpoint? If you mean the SASR, they do exist, I try and research the real-life aspects as much as I can.
Would you be interested in reading more? :3 Sorry to say you'll be waiting a fair while for the whole thing, but maybe I can share some more excerpts if I get requests from fans like you :)

Huh … I’m not entirely sure I want to read the older versions, largely because I suspect the original story paints humans in the usual light of “Chaotic evil” monsters attacking and murdering without reason (a common enough pet peeve in both furry works and environmental movies) but the quality of work I can see here has already earned you a watch. It does work well as a prequel both for how it establishes the setting, sets up at least two characters, and raises enough legitimate questions that I want to read on just to find out the answers.
How furs and macros exist alongside humans, and how it appears to be a sudden development seem like the most basic ones, but I’m /really/ curious as to why the furs have such better equipment. I’m also curious as to why surrender wasn’t an option when there mission was to TEST something and report whether or not the furs are vulnerable to it. And, just why there haven’t been any encounters between the furs and civilian humans … yet? At least? Not explaining them now just makes me more curious, and more likely to read the next chapters. Not explaining ever … makes me think it’s a bunch of plot holes.
Now seeing as you’ve already asked another commenter, I think I’ll save time and just point out right now that my favorite scene is when both sides were standing off. The humans feverishly assessing the situation while the furs politely attempt to make them surrender. It was tense, it was unpredictable, regardless of what direction the overall story is supposed to take any number of different results with varying degrees of success /could/ have occurred. And most of all both sides were treated as competent and intelligent, even if overall sympathy was clearly towards the side of the furies.

That was easily the most detailed comment I've ever received on any of my writing works, thank you very much for your time and opinions! In return I'll share some answers with you. Most of them aren't secrets, and are well established by the seventh chapter (which I might post here later, it happens to be a favourite of mine and makes macro fans happy).
You're wise not to read the older versions, I had the humans acting a lot more sadistic. I originally did it to make it 100% clear who the reader is supposed to be rooting for, but it set the mood too dark on reflection. I'm glad I made this rewrite.
Furs and macro furs exist only alongside each other, and actually live entirely underground in humungous installations, with self-sufficient food, fusion power, everything necessary for staying down there for many decades, as indeed they have. Humans force all furs to stay in their underground bases using powerful stolen orbital technology, while at the same time preventing any curious civilians from approaching them, since integration is the very last thing they want, due to some long history between the two races which isn't detailed until much later.
The furs having better equipment is part of that explanation, to give it away would be a bit of a spoiler.
Funny, I did have a short sentence or two explaining why the SASR didn't surrender, but I couldn't get it worded the way I liked and I deleted it. There's a long history of hatred from the humans to the furs, combined with a genuine drought of information about them, leading to a lot of rumours and stories about their habits. Most soldiers sent to fight them are under the impression that they will be eaten by the Macros, who they believe are barely restrained monsters that the furs can somehow control. Given this view, and the terror felt from facing one head on, most choose to try and fight to escape this fate, no matter how bad the odds. Thanks for mentioning this, I'll definitely try and make it more clear.
Thanks for that info on your favourite scene, it's really helpful to me. Cheers again for all the feedback! :)

Whoa talk about a long time fan, I don't even remember what year I was last on Macrophile, abandoned that for FA ages ago. Is it still in use or has it dwindled to just the hardcore users?
This version is certainly much more revised than the one you would have read, hope it held up. I've also written plenty more stories since the MP days, links are on my userpage.

I wouldn't know about how much it is still in use, I never was active on it (at that time my English was pretty bad, so hardly ever made any posts, heh, its still bad )
It did yeah, and so far, I've only read the welcome visitor to be honest, but I will get to reading the rest when I have the time. And, if I remember right, there was 1 more story in this setting, about a human kid/teen taking pictures, but is captured and taken inside the furry base? Something along those lines, might have been defection, can't say I remember right :)

Speaking of Welcome Visitor, I've been told that this is supposed to take place in the same setting but can't seem to find any actual confirmation. Does it?
Personally I was wishing for a sequel to find more about life on the furry base after reading that story, particularly after Oliver's introduction to it, to the point of coming up with ideas of my own. ^^

It's the other way around actually, Welcome Visitor was based on the same universe as this story, but as a story within a story. As in, One of the characters within the larger novel is himself writing a story, and that story is Welcome Visitor, and parts of it would be included in the larger novel.
It was a whimsy that blew out into a full blown story of itself though. The novel is halted, going nowhere for now

Any update on this story, this prologue is really good. I'd love to see where this story goes from here. Giant foxes are great, they just make any story their in infinitely better! I would love it if you would consider writing more about this story and the big foxes it contains :3
