I have to ask though, why was it shot at f/14?

Depth of field.

At 18mm though? You were having trouble getting the two focused? I'm honestly surprised. Wide angles like that already have a ton of depth of field.

I would generally avoid stuff like f/11 and above because it makes the image softer from diffraction.

Well, that probably wouldn't make too much difference. You would have had to stand a lot further back to get the same framing. At longer focal lengths, you have less depth of field. Same thing with closer focus distances.

The only time I end up shooting at smaller apertures than f/8 or 10 is if the camera's pointing right into the sun or another bright light source, or if I want to do a longer exposure in a brightly lit area, such as to smooth out falling water. Sometimes you might also need that extra DOF, but not really here.

I'd probably shoot this one from f/5.6-8, or maybe even wider to get a more blurred background. Often with portraits, a blurred background is good. If you don't already have it, take a look at the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G. Amazingly sharp lens and you'll love all the photos you can get with lower available light. It's about two stops faster than your kit lens, which means you can quadruple your shutter speed, or divide your ISO by four for the same exposure. It all makes for better looking photos! Plus, the lens is small, light, and cheap for what you get.
