*Normally I don't upload older artwork but there was a reason for it with this piece. It was one of two pictures of mine that appeared in the 2012 Vancoufur con book, (however in the book it was black and white.) This upload shows what the original looks like with its bright orange colors.
Production notes - This piece was sketched out on 20 lb paper, 11 by 17 ins in size. It was scanned into the computer and colored using Photoshop.
Scene - Some 250 years ago on the west coast of Vancouver Island there were large numbers of wolf tribes. They interacted, traded and grew along with the human first nations who mostly saw them as spirits, deities. With the coming of the white man the wolf tribes soon disappeared from the scene. Nobody knows whether the wolf tribes died out or simply pulled out. Was it because of disease? Was it because they saw what white settlers were doing to the lands that they had cared for and watched over for countless generations?
A brilliant sunset silhouettes a couple of islands and three wolf tribe braves as they cross Barkley Sound sometime in the early 1800's. These three are late for a potlach that is taking place on the other side of the vast inlet. It is not unusual for wolf tribesman to paddle long distances late in the day or at night. With keen hearing and good night vision they can see landmarks on clear nights after dark. Soon they will see smoke rising from the distant fires of a village they are paddling towards. Soon they will arrive where good food, fellowship and celebration will occupy the next few days.
