After they 'accidently' transformed him on the ship (it's on a sort of zeppelin, he was kinda tricked by the captain telling him that he'll turn back after a while and such and that he has to stand there every day for a few minutes, where he inserted his hand is meant just for general maintenance making sure everything is okay and the head part is where that slowly over time he starts just wants to make the captain happy, and also a good friend, slowly disregarding his own wishes and dreams.
