Textures!

there are to type of textures there are base textures and collision textures

base texture is something that stay flat through out the piece.

collision texture is something that is a result of interaction between objects

I.E. the white water it not just a colour or anything like that. it moves with the water and makes the piece a little more in depth.

it really adds to the art work when you can show some sort of movement
