Like many things in this comic, this is yet another element taken straight out of my childhood. Whenever I would stay home sick from school as a kid, my mom would always put me up on the couch with a blanket, game controller/remote, a bowl of soup, and our old VHS of Willy Wonka.
To those who don't know, Pavlov was a behavioral scientist who was able to make a dog associate a bell with feeding time (discovering the sound of the bell would make the dog salivate, even if food was not presented). For me, the repeated viewings of the movie whenever I was sick reached the point where Willy Wonka actually had a subconscious healing effect, that I still sometimes feel even today as an adult. Every time I get sick I have this strange desire to pop in the DVD of the film. I rarely do anymore, but that association (sick time = Wonka time) still exists.
The Gene Wilder one, of course. We are the music makers... and we are the dreamers of the dreams. Come on, it doesn't get any better than that.
And yes, Seth apparently is also a fan of CSI: Miami. Or he just follows internet trends. Hard to tell.
I'm going to try and get the next page cranked out before the weekend, since Whitney and I have plans to be away for the entire time. Tomorrow is her birthday (my lovely wife turns 23!), so I am taking her out to celebrate in style for the weekend. So yes, everyone be sure to hop over to her profile on here (
catsmeow) to wish her a happy birthday!
Also, the Peter & Company Animated Pilot Kickstarter is over the halfway point now in its goal (currently $5,160/10K) with 34 days left as of this writing! We're coming up on the second half of the fundraiser, so it's time to kick the efforts into overdrive! Thank you so much to EVERYONE who has donated and helped to spread the word already. Please continue to post the link to the Donations page on your Facebook, Twitter, FA journals, or anywhere else you can share it! Let's get that goal met so that Peter & Company can finally become an animated series!

Pavlov's dogs. He had a dog that he conditioned to react to a bell. Every time he rang a bell, he would also give the dog a bowl of food. After doing it enough times, he was able to ring the bell and make the dog salivate even if there was no food presented. The dog was trained to equate the bell with food.

Yay!! Such an interestin page! Many people know about Pavlovian tricks, but not all of them know that it's also called "Classical conditioning".
So thumbs up for the accurate vocabulary AND for the 'ring a bell' joke XD
However, I don't understand something: shouldn't Willy Wonka have the opposite effect on you? I mean, if you always watched it while being sick and so your mind associates Willy Wonka=sick time; then doesn't it make you feel sick, even when you're healthy?
PS: HAPPY BIRTHDAY WHITNEY!!!

See, that's what I would have thought, too. But I think it's because Wonka was always played as a reaction to already being sick. If I always got sick after watching it, then that would be the case, but since it was used in conjunction with the medicine/soup/blanket on the couch/games/etc., it just became part of the recovery routine.
It was the start of each sick day. I'd always end up doing something else afterwards (playing NES games, building LEGOs/K'NEX, Domino Rally, etc.), but Wonka was the one constant element that my mom always used every time.
I think she just figured I liked that movie so it would make me happy. To this day I don't think I've ever told her the effect it had, hehe.

Hmmm, I guess that makes sense, if you always had Wonka plus the medicine and comfort. So just like Pavlov's dogs would start salivating after hearing the bell, even before seeing the food; then your body would start healing while watching Wonka, even before taking the medicine.
*sigh* So many years of human evolution, and our minds can still be conditioned as easily as a dog's, haha XD
Oh well. Again, awesome page! and good luck with the animated pilot project. And AGAIN, Happy Birthday to Whitney!!
