My initial idea for April Fool's Day this year, before I rejected it in favor of Pinkie Pie and KT Have a Baby, was to do a series of images making fun of some of the more unsavory fan-based alternate pony characterizations.
First up is this one of "Trollestia", that is, a troll doll based on Princess Celestia, not Celestia as a troll, which is a concept based on puerile misinterpretations of Celestia's actions in "A Bird in the Hoof" and "The Best Night Ever".
(Biiig hint: don't bother commenting to say "But she really is a troll because blabla" or "It's just a joke, don't take it seriously, bla bla" because it WILL be deleted.)

She DOES have an impish sense of humor, and chafes at the elaborate propriety force on her by her station. She DOES do things now and then deliberately to amuse herself, or to deflate someone's sense of pomposity, and that CAN be seen as "trolling".
But ... really, it makes her more sympathetic for me. She's TRAPPED in being The Princess, Regina Ultima Equestria, and she has been for more than a thousand years, much of it spent completely alone. Those letter Twilight sends are as much for Celestia's benefit as anything else. Nopony can or will treat her as an equal -- not even her own sister, anymore, who's still recovering from a thousand-year prison sentence of her own making (trapped as Night Mare Moon, far more than trapped IN the moon). The one pony who came closest was Twilight Sparkle ... and those letters are Celestia's way of living vicariously through her student, living an ordinary live with the good, close friends that she'll never have again, if, indeed, she ever did.
So I'm willing to cut her some slack for a few gentle little pranks.

True.
It just bugs me when fans think it's soooooo funny to call her "the biggest troll in Equestria" and depict her doing cruel and nasty things to her subjects, her student Twilight, her own sister, etc.
My theory about Celestia is that she's a maternal figure (especially to Twilight), and how fans react to her speaks to how they relate to their own mothers. My mom is awesome, which allows me to see the awesomeness in Celestia.
(I think that's why it bugs me so much; when other people depict Celestia as nasty, it subconsciously feels to me like they're insulting my mom.)
