Spawnlings are raised communally, they don't really have a concept of a mother or father. It is usually the older Vanguard who are tasked with this role, and an important part of raising spawnlings is instilling them with wisdom from times past, about the elder's own exploits as well as those from the revered ancestors.

I've always tried to include strong female role models in all of the stuff I've written. While I like the male/male buttsecks, an all male cast would become very boring to read, even for me

All concepts you could also use for your sushi eels, or any other character for that matter to help inspire you with your writing or visual artwork. An imaginative and fired up juicy, delicious brain-meats is a terrible thing to waste I've seen the work you do when you are in a buzzed mood, and it is glorious, Ms. Murikami!

Vanguard have two hearts (thicker blood, larger body, and for redundancy), but in their culture much like many on Earth, it is an organ with significance. In states of heightened emotions they will also beat a lot faster. Not to mention a potential weak-spot if the enemy can make it through the bony plates underneath the skin.
