always wondered why the US models had square headlamps, i know the huge bumpers were for crash regs though
-useless info- the original Giugiaro design of the Mk1 had square lamps.. Volkswagen fitted the round ones as they had the units in production already so i guess the Westmoreland version was closer to the original

I'll have to look that up because I don't know if it became a government regulation that they all needed square or rectangular headlights or what it was. But I know even the Jeeps went to the rectangle headlights in the 80's before the Jeep purists begged them to bring back the round ones.
could be, might just have been because square headlamps were easier/cheaper to obtain in America at that point, they switched to round ones by the time the mk2 came out anyway.. but not on the jetta (even the mk1 jetta had square lamps here.. odd)
