This picture is the first part of a series I plan to start, featuring the gods, goddesses and other mythical beings of the Hawaiian culture. I've only been studying here on this island for a few months, but I am deeply impressed by its peopl and of course their culture and language.
This guy is Kamohoali'i, the god (or king) of the sharks. He was the one who gave his sister Pele (the volcano goddess) a great canoe so she and her other brothers could sail to Hawaii, thus marking the beginning of their reign.
I tried to stay as close to the Hawaiian culture as possible with the clothes, weapons and accessoires. A loincloth, a wooden spear (spiked with shark teeth :P), a wooden hook and wooden necklace, wristbands made of limu (a sort of algae) and the obligatory tattoos. ;) With his body colouring I tried to stay as close as possible to a Gray Reef Shark, a local species.
