Often I assume they're female, but it can be difficult to tell.

Some species exhibit extreme sexual di-morphism.

Failing that, the pedilaps can give a clue. If they have massive palps, you've probably got a male on your hands.

I think I'd be less freaked out by a wolf than a spider. :P

I'm exactly the same.
Oh, I wish I could after study get some practice i zoo. I'd love to work with wolves and big cats...
But I'm afraid if somebody would bring me a spider and want me to heal it... Brrr...

They're really not so scary once you get a close-up look. I guess it's the idea of spiders that's often more scary than anything else.

Except black widows and brown recluse spiders. Those suckers are scary.

You know, Widows don't really scare me since they tend to just chill on their web.

I do take great care when working with them though. :P

I don't mind getting up close to a widow when I'm taking a picture or whatnot, but man, the thought of one crawling on me gives me the cold shivers like nothing else. :P

Me too... It's even worse than paying taxes.
But, luckily, there are no black widows in Poland. Unfortulately, I can't say the same about taxes... ;-PPP

We've got thousands of widows around here... I could go find one right now, if I were so inclined. :P

Once I found a male widow building a web on the outside of my bedroom door.

I've read, that not every specie has dangerous poison. And that they're not realy agressive...

It's true... as poisonous critters go, widows are pretty docile. They mostly only bite if they feel like you're attacking them.

I still think they're creepy looking, though. :P

I believe there are some Latrodectus species in Poland. <.<

Maybe not throughout the whole country though.

I'm not sure, but I think, they're not.
In Russia there is Latrodectus pallidus. But I don't know, in wich region.

A beautiful picture! I would find it hard to choose between wolf spiders and Metaphid jumping spiders as my favourites.
