Until one little eight year old girl made a fuss over him. That was Rin (the kitty in this case) and she is the one human he is deeply attached to. This scene is repeated in the series at least three times that I know of.
However, I must pay homage to the incongruity of the situation and I do that in the title. That title comes from an old poem and the dog and cat are polar opposites. The fact that they can coexist here is a testament to the power of love over nature.
