I think its the wide range of color used to somehow get the impression of one tone overall. The use of white is also very dramatic but effective.

yeah, I was practising a bit with a limited colour palette and got onto eyes because someone mentioned how often the actual eye highlights are the only white bits? so I guess I felt like testing it :B

I'd say it was a success - though this seems like a very abstract picture the whites of the eyes make it seem more precise for some reason.
