Ferrets play with their mouths. They play nip a lot, but nothing hard. You have to train them not to nip which is actually pretty easy. When they try to bite you, you stop and keep your finger stuck in their mouth for a few seconds beyond when they want to let go. They soon learn that biting is uncomfortable/not fun for them.
You can do this with any age ferret successfully.

Sometimes you are lucky enough to get one who doesn't bite. Mine bit when I picked him from the shop but at that time I had a big ring so I didn't feel anything. I can't really remember when he stopped biting but I think it was that day or a few days after, maybe after we both slept together on my bed (yes the very first day), for three hours, (with then my own smell as he slept and still does in my worn t-shirts).
