I haven't done a beer review in aaages. Figured now was about time. I can post this in my general gallery, right? Hope so.
Anyway, here we have Raison D'Être by Dogfish Head. They're an excellent brewery. This was a present from my father.
Poured into a pint glass, served chilled and allowed to bloom for about half an hour. (Picture taken after I drank half of it. >.>)
Pour- Damn, what a pretty beer. Deep red hues throughout. It's really quite stunning. Nice lacing that is still sticking long afterwards. Somewhat thin head that dissipated quickly.
Aroma- Sweet and malty on the opening notes. Notes of raisin and plum, with a sweeter finish. Definite dark sugar notes. Faint alcoholic scent. The fruit notes and alcohol notes bloomed quite a bit after sitting a while.
Taste- Somewhat complex! Sweet opening notes quickly move to fruitier, malty tastes. Darker fruits in this- raisins, plums..maybe figs? Dark sugar notes then come in, and the finish is very sweet, alcoholic, and dry. Perhaps a bit too alcoholic for my taste. This becomes stronger in time. Somewhat sophisticated though.
Overall- Not really sure how I felt about this one. It's definitely got a lot of flavor and some nice complexity to it. I absolutely love that Belgian brewing sugar- it leaves some nice dark sugary notes. The alcoholic finish and aroma is just a little too much for me. To be expected from an 8% APV brew, but it's just a little too strong for this beer. It leaves a little to be desired. That being said, this is still an excellent beer that I would recommend to anyone wanting something with more complex flavors, without needing a really advanced palette.

Thanks!
You should be able to find this beer- Dogfish Head seems to be distributed over a wide range.
It's really not a bad beer. Personally I think The Lost Abbey does a better example of a similar beer with Judgement Day, but this is probably a bit easier to come by, while still being quite tasty.
