I've always thought Mighty Mouse wasn't really interested in Pearl Pureheart, and was just rescuing her because that was the form.

Actually you might not be TOO far from the truth!
Certainly in the late '80's re-make of the show done my John Kricfalusi, there was enough homosexual innuendo thrown in to certainly ask the question of Mighty Mouse's sexuality (along with a couple of the male supporting cast too!). =3
