It's an abdomen ( like spiders ). A reserve of fat / energy in a very soft bottom and hard, at the top, to make a solid support to the spine.

No tanning through fur. I wonder if furs would hang out at the beach less often because of that.

Maybe. And I think that they'll go less also because it's really hot in the sun during the day.
Especially if you have dark fur xD
